Retitled thread for its new purpose. What a useful thread!

Filmmakers with a film in the contest are still allowed to make their own thread for their piece. Little recaps and "here's what I thought of the finalists in general", as well as contest handicapping, should remain here.

Rick McCallum loves you!

So there are 6 awards given. 4 are made up every year, the other two are the Lucas Selects and Fan Choice.

Saber, Star Wars in a Notebook, Sudden Remakes should win an award and would be surprised if they didn't.

That leaves 3 other awards and it gets harder after that.

Feel there needs to be one for acting performance and Blasted Behavior, Glen Eisley Glen Mos, SW Family Dysfunction will battle for that one.
One of those will take home a trophy. (Can't quite decide yet who has the best performance yet so I'm leaving it open, all are great performances)

The race for the other two are wide open with Death Star over San Francisco and Star Wars:Retold as front runners for me on the final two spots. Wouldn't be surprised to see WTF Star Wars, Where are they Now, Knights of the old Republic Revan butmy money is on Retold and Death Star one.

That is my 6, I'll just have to wait and see how close I am.

I'll say Fan Choice goes to Saber and Lucas selects Notebook.

Actually, last year they gave out eight trophies and I think this year it's actually seven. The press release announcing that '09 voting listed the categories. IIRC:

George Lucas Selects
Audience Choice
Best Action
Best Comedy
Best Parody
Best Animated Movie
Spirit of Fandom Award

I think that last one opens up the choices quite a bit. I can't speak about the entire history of the contest, but it seems to me like there's an impetus to spread the awards around a little to avoid a sweep.

So if Saber nabs Audience Choice, does it also get Best Action? Or does Revan then take the Action slot by default? Star Sports is fun and energetic. Is it an Action contender? What about Sudden Remakes? It seems primarily an Animated contender, but it's also an Action piece.

Any of the "retelling" shorts seem like the best Spirit contenders to me, with Notebook topping my personal ballot, followed by Retold. But it would also be my top choice for Best Animated, with Sudden Remakes in the runner-up spot.

In fact, Notebook, Retold, and Cinemagic all seem to be head-to-head for the same awards, which is unfortunate. Three strong entries fighting over limited real estate. Although I could see Notebook taking Lucas, Retold taking Comedy, and Cinemagic taking Spirit somehow.

And the distinction between Best Comedy and Best Parody seems like a fine hair to split -- kind of an excuse to honor two comedies. Admittedly, it's a comedy-rich field. But Saber is a comedy. And a parody. With a lot of action. And what appears to be a huge audience following. Is it the best in all of those categories? And even if it is, would it really be in the spirit of the contest to throw four (or five) out of seven trophies at one film in a 22-film field?

And where do these categories leave Death Star Over San Fran? I think it would be a hands-down no-brainer lock for Best VFX, except that category is gone this year. (I realize it's not a usual category -- but really? It's an SW contest! Lightsabers and such abound.) So it seems like it can only contend for Lucas, Audience, or Spirit awards.

I don't know. I'm terrible at handicapping stuff like this. And I am, of course, biased in favor of my own entry. ;-) (Thanks, btw, for recognizing Cameron's performance in Glen Eisley. As I've mentioned on Atom, I was lucky to have him.)

I guess we'll see come the 24th. I'm just hoping for a chance to meet as many of the finalists face-to-face as possible. ;-)

Personally,

I think that Lucasfilm could host their own Fan Film Challenge without MTV. I think they chose to contract this out to a website that specializes in hosting videos and has the connections in place for earning advertising dollars. With that in mind, a panel of individuals from Atom Entertainment and Lucasfilm select the award winners. IMO, they give awards based on production quality and entertainment value, while taking into consideration what films will generate the most visits and bring them more revenue from ads. While online voting is open for the Audience Choice awards, I think it's obvious that visits/ratings are key to their decisions.

That is what I get for not reading the news...7 awards. Guess it is too late to change my vote. happy

My flick is out, it won't win. Star Wars in a notebook and Retold do a much better job in their retellings of star wars. Retold has a great raw, natural, electric vibe and would be a perfect fit for "Spirit of Fandom Award". I still think "In a notebook" will get the Lucas Selects. Highly creative and imaginative piece of work. Everything comes together beautifully. Mine feels like I took all my legos in a sandbox and dumped them out and started playing. It comes together but there are a lot of problems in the short. Like I've said before, I'm glad it is in. All the original files erased when my computer crashed 2 years ago. I was lucky to find the .mov file which is playing on Atom in my mom's computer. The sound and image quality is as good as it is going to get unless I went back and did a do over on sound and visuals. I don't feel like doing that. I look at it as a stepping stone flick.

So that means...
George Lucas Selects: In a Notebook
Audience Choice: Saber
Spirit of Fandom: Star Wars Retold
Best Action: Death Star over San Fransisco (just wish he would have cut the front, ending is awesome)
Best Animated Movie: Sudden Remakes
Best Comedy: Family Dysfunction vs. Blasted Behavior with Family Dysfuntion winning.
Best Parody: Glen Eisley Glen Mos vs. WTF Star Wars with Glen Eisley taking the gold.

Those are my official choices, front of Death Star might hurt his chances but I've already picked so I'm sticking to my guns. Feel free to second guess.

My unbiased take on possibilities for each one:

• George Lucas Selects - "Saber", "Star Wars in a Notebook!", "Star Wars: Retold", "Star Sports Theatrical Trailer", "Star Wars Episode XVI: Family Dysfunction"

• Audience Choice - "Saber", "Star Wars in a Notebook!", "Star Wars Episode XVI: Family Dysfunction", "Star Wars: Retold"

• Best Action - "Knights of the Old Republic: Revan", "The Closet Unleashed", "Glen Eisley, Glen Mos", "Mark Valley vs. Drew Mazanec"

• Best Comedy - "Bad Day for Vader", "Blasted Behavior", "Star Wars Episode XVI: Family Dysfunction", "The Fate of the Duel", "Glen Eisley, Glen Mos"

• Best Parody - "Saber", "Star Sports Theatrical Trailer", "Star Wars: Retold"

• Best Animated Movie - "Emperor Palpatine and the..", "Lord Vader's Trial", "No Love for Wampa", "Sudden Remakes 1", "Where Are They Now"

• Spirit of Fandom Award - "Death Star Over San Francisco", "Jedi Camp", "Star Fury!", "Star Wars: Cinemagic", "Star Wars: Retold", "The Closet Unleashed"

I think almost all animations will be kept to the animations category. Some films are competitive for multiple categories, but with only 7 awards this year, award winners may be limited to just one award total.

So bkh501... you have Saber taking 3 awards home with George Lucas Selects, Audience, and Best Parody? It could happen, I could see it taking Lucas selects and Audience, and yes being a parody it could take that one also.

Care to make a wager. happy

Wow, based on views/ratings, I'm surprised that you guys both considered my film in the running for *anything*. But thanks. Ya brought a smile to my face.

Guybrush -- What can I say? I hope you're 100% right. :-) Also, I think you're being too hard on yourself.

BKH -- Best Action? I think we might be a dark horse for that one... But thanks for the thought.

Heck, I think Death Star Over SF is more of an action movie than mine -- and I don't think Death Star is an action movie at all. :-) (Sorry, Guybrush. But it's funny how different stuff hits different people.)

Also, since this thread seems to be pretty much limited to folks who've seen all of the finalists by now, I'll risk a *SPOILER* to ask a question that's been on my mind from the moment I first saw Death Star (even before the finalists were up):

How the heck do you get the Enterprise in there? Is there no licensing issue? Or is it covered by some kind of parody/fair use loophole?

I'm not knocking the short. I actually like it a lot. And when I saw it as a finalist, I figured Atom just called the guy and said "We really want you in the finals because the VFX are amazing. You've just got to cut out the Enterprise for legal reasons."

I'd really love to know if anyone has the actually skinny on what went down there.

I think maybe BKH was just listing possible contenders without necessarily ranking them (though I could be wrong). However, you guys are touching on an interesting point about spreading the "wealth" as it were.

Yes, w/ 22 finalists and 7 awards, it would be cool if there were seven different winners. (Easy for me to say, as I'm not a frontrunner for anything. ;-) )

But last year, with 8 awards and *40* finalists, there was a double winner in "George Lucas Hip Hop Awards" (Audience Choice & Best Animation). So it's hard to say what strange and mysterious forces drive the final choices (other than the "Audience Choice" voting -- which isn't exactly a transparent process in itself).

Yeah, that is a good question. Hope he goes to comic con so we can ask him. Opens the door for other cgi models to use if it is a parody loophole. Maybe Lucasfilm owns the rights to that ship design if they made the effects for the film. I have no idea.

I had already picked my award guesses before I saw the categories...so I had to squeeze Death Star in there somehow, action it is. It's got a shot at action.

BkH...that is a good call with Death Star taking the spirit award, Raven taking action is also a solid choice. I could see both of those taking those awards.

My film was "The Closet Unleashed", and I had sent it to Atom.com last August, not knowing it would end up in this year's contest. I wish I had sent them a 3 min version that would have been more appropriate for an internet audience. I realize that the beginning is very slow, and a the stuff in the middle could have been removed, leaving mostly stop motion shots for the figures.

Nice batch of entries this year.

Do I still hold the record for having lost more times at Atomfilms Fanfilms with 4?
