EZ-CHEWIE - A Star Wars Fan Film Now Available on Youtube Let me know your thoughts
Greetings all. Well we didn't get into the Atom challenge, (and congrats to those who did). This however has made it possible to spread my fan film around a bit more. I'm planning to take it to festival, and if anyone has suggestions for fest that treat fan films lovingly then I would love to hear about it. You can watch it at youtube at
. Please feel free to leave comments and rate it. Also be friends and share your fan films with me as I'd love to see them.
EZ-CHEWIE also has a page at myspace.com/ezchewie and on facebook if you search EZ-CHEWIE.

I thought it was funny.
The only complaint I have is the sound is off center. However, it does not take away from the comedy too much.

I like the idea and feel the writing is clever with a fun button. Nicely paced, too. Good use of production design (gotta love a house full of Star Wars paraphernalia). And in the absence of a dedicated score, the music was fine. (And I'm not at all biased by the fact that Cameron actually sent me some EZ-CHEWIE gum; although that was pretty cool.)
If I had some constructive criticism to offer, it would be about the cinematography. The lighting scheme felt a little flat. Stronger sources with a more defined direction give you more contrast and help to create a look that's a little more cinematic. A small kicker or two to separate your leads from the backgrounds a bit more couldn't hurt either. Trying to control shadows in such a small space with the walls so close can be tricky, so get the lights as high as you can to throw your shadows down. And you don't need an expensive lighting kit really. You can get some clip/work lights from a hardware store and combine them with some black foil to light a space that small. As it is, you've got kind of a flat, TV-ish look.
Also, watch your framing. With what looks like a tall lead framed along with a guy sitting on a toilet, the shot looks awkward -- "Lucas'" head scraping the top of the frame and "Yoda" cut off at the chin on the bottom. Try to control the composition a little more to put your points of interest closer to the horizontal center of the frame. Maybe jump on a box or step ladder and shoot down past Lucas towards Yoda. Or sit Yoda up on something taller so there's not so much blank space between their faces in the two-shots. Similarly, at the end, maybe throw an apple box down for Yoda to stand on (or, the cheaper version, get your lead to hunker down a bit).
But I still think it's fun. (And am amused when Yoda seems to start channeling Joe Cocker for a few seconds in the middle.)
Best of luck with it, Cameron and co.!
