Wow, I hadn't checked back in a few days, thanks for all the input guys. That's precisely why i posted the question here, figured I'd get a whole range of responses and opinions..

So anyway to comment on a few of the responses...

I'm not sure of the model number, which would obviously squash the whole debate, but I know a few things.

1. It was quite large, shoulder mounted style camera, didn't look like any of the medium sized prosumer cams out there.
2. It was a Sony

I agree that a frustrating aspect is that you can throw any crappy video footage on a Blu-Ray disc and say it's HD...But then again, I'm a pretty techy guy and I would like to think I can spot the difference between HD & SD.

*Here's an important point, he had been filming for about 10 minutes when this all came up, so if there was indeed a switching over to HD, then I should notice a difference in quality in the rest of the video...(assuming he throws in one shot from that initial 10 minute filming)

Ahh, I just had a good idea. idea We had standard photographers there as well, who took a whopping 1700 photos all day. I'd imagine the videographer had to have snuck his way into a few of the photos, and maybe we can narrow down the camera by looking at the photos...this is about to get all CSI up in here.

I'll search for some photos over the weekend, my wife seems to think she has seen some with the video guy right in frame.
