Hi,

Just watched it, that is too cool for school!

Someone mentioned about the colours not being star warsy, I get what you mean but I actually like it. Like you said it looks a bit like Payback or Underworld but that really added to the effect. Now just replace the star wars music with some good old rock and metal ..... grin

The Emperor does look wierd, a bit like the old guy who sits in the balcony and heckles on the muppet show.

I do agree with most of the comments though that the bar is going to be raised, even though it isn't even out yet I am looking forward to seeing what can top this.

Good work guys, can't wait to see what the Revelation is!

THANK YOU for all your comments of all kinds.

Here's a few comments from myself, personally, not as a spokesperson of any kind for the team:

Audio issues: The audio was mixed on a power session of three 28-hour days on a Pro-Tools system under *severe* stress. The deadline was unmovable; The FarPoint convention.

I would think the idea was *dialogue above all*, i.e. make dialog audible no matter what. Perhaps the "drop the music behind dialog" was overdone, I dont know.

Lets just say that the audio section of the post production time is given a large chunk of time. WAY beyond three crunch days happy

Nice use of faked volumetrics... Shine?
Yuppety.

The color scheme and general look of the cinematography is awesome -- BUT not particularly StarWarsy. I hope this was the intent, because I definitely felt I was watching something inspired more by LOTR or Matrix or (to use a less popular example?) Underworld, as far as cinematography went.
Funny you should say this... could you give some more detailed examples why you think this?

Personally, I've been advocating for a slighly "updated" non-lucas cinematography (not that I'd had much say since all footage was "in the can" even before I begun) but personally I wouldn't mind a star wars film with bullet time and the works grin

Oh wait, I already made one. *grin*

Loved the red-dressed woman's hairdo
Zhanna; There's nothing not to love about her. From the black lipstick to her fierce eyes... she is the Queen Bitch of the Galaxy. She even has this murder line in the film, I wish I could tell you.

As for acting, she wipes the floor with most others both in this film and in the real SW films. Haydn Christianssen is a whiny brat in comparision, and Lucas is gonna cry if he sees this happy

what programs did you guys use for all of your CG?
It's all over the map in the crew... MAX, Lightwave, Maya, Cinema4d etc....

for the most part is was pretty good, some of the animations were awesome, and some were sub par
What did you not like? Specifics always helps. happy

The male actors were more convincing than the lead women
You only say that because you havn't seen much of Zhanna (i.e. Karen's acting) yet. Mmmmmmmmm. *evil drool*

The bar scene looks very impressive
Thank you; The Bar is all me... wink Loads of freaky neon signs and windows windows windows showing the great skyscape outside..... every frame with a moving camera. *grin*

Fantastic trailer! I just wish we were told more about the artifact they are looking for though
Well, it's this thingy that from which, eventually, things will be .... revealed ... hence... "revelations"... geddit? grin

Or not. I dunno. I'm just the "add spaceships" guy happy

Why, the Grail, of course! The HOLYcron
Heh happy

[blockquote]And your lightsabers look kind of cartoony...intentional?
..
As for the sabers, it looks like it was an odd choice of blending modes...what was used?
..
think the sabers looked pretty darned good. My guess is that they were composited with Linear Dodge - people are used to screened sabers
[/blockquote]

For the sabers - these are not necessarily the final sabers. I must first explain a logistic issue; When time came for the trailer, I still had not yet the actual footage to roto, and there was too little time to ship disks, and I have an expensive connectin so downloading huge uncompressed files is out-of-the-question. Hence, my work was done on compressed files, and later the sabers alone (with no background) was sent back to the director for comping in *his* end.

Now, the in my end, I use all sorts of compositing modes, but for this method (i.e. to ship the sabers as a 'package') to work, I had to make some accomodation to my methods and created a single subcomposit-layer that was comped in *add* mode (Linear Dodge would have been nice, but the Director had only AE 5, not 5.5).

On top of this, a severe Time Crunch to get the triailer done was upon us, so while most of the shots are pretty well tuned, a couple needs a few tweaks... personally I am least happy with the "three saber lock" at the end, partially due to the insistance of our fight coordinator to have a purple saber (Mace Windu style happy ) and frankly, Purple is hard to get to look good and visible at the same time......

For the final film I will be doing the actual saber composites myself, with all my assorted blending modes, so things will look a little different. NOT MUCH, though, mind you, since these sabers, for the large part, look the way *I* want sabers to look.

I *hate* screened on sabers. THey look limp, powerless, misty, and soft-porn wink whereas Add or LinearDodge or my own ScrAdd mode looks more powerful and actually glowy.

There is also quite a bit of interactive light stuff, although not much is visible in the trailer. Heck, for the shot near the end where Taryn is holding her single blue saber at the camera, there is even tiny gleams of reflections of the saber in here eyes, just to make her look even more pissed. *giggle*

[blockquote]Due to the very dark backdrops, I imagine it will be a challenge to composite sabers that will appease the whims of all die-hard saber artists[/blockquote] Indeed it will. I am also doing my damndest to try to, in some instances, fake sabers casting light if ever so lightly.

[blockquote]the speech EQ varies wildly from bright to dull, soft to loud. I'm not too fond of speech recorded on set - it lacks the punch and clarity of an overdub.
[/blockquote] I am not sure if ADR is being considered or not. You'll have to ask El Directore. We surly know that some of the on-set audio is...problematic... due to water noises in the cave.

[blockquote]I HATE YOU GUYS [/blockquote] We hate you too, TAC happy happy *loving hug*

[blockquote]Someone mentioned about the colours not being star warsy, I get what you mean but I actually like it[/blockquote] Strange you should say that, because I was just commenting to the crew how the color sheme seems almost ridicolously pre-planned.... how the interior of the musem used for the embassy scene has a similar red/orange/brown hue-scape as the cave walls at Shenandoa and the wood panelling in the bar interior.... and how the only scene which contained any green (or grenery) whatsoever, has been color-corrected by yours truly to become a sunset scene happy

Interesting.

So, anyway, who caught the winged monkey?

happy

Wow! Jaw and floor had a meeting for the entire length of this trailer. I am salivating to see the final film.

Oh, and did anyone else see the Viper at about 27 seconds? Passes by in the background as the woman walks towards the foreground in a Coruscant alley.

grin - great feedback!

{what programs did you guys use for all of your CG?}

We are all working on different packages across the platforms, but there is a little bit of most of the major players in there; Max, Maya, Cinema4D, Lightwave etc.

I did hear a few dialogue tone discrepancies in sound quality throughout the trailer. But those problems were negligible compared to the lack of volume on the dialogue. ADR might end up very time consuming, but it would help a great deal and add a lot of depth to the sound. The closer you get the actors to the mic the richer the dialogue will end up sounding. You can always tinker with it later in post. But as it stands now you might need to filter some of the dialogue to give it the same feeling as the rest. Equal it out anotherwards...then compress the dialogue to -10db. And then add it to the music and effects and tinker with the master volumes to get everything the way you want it.

I don't think it's unfixable. I just think you're going to need a lot more time on audio before the release.

Remember 50% audio and 50% video makes a great movie. So many of the filmmakers around here rush the audio to get it finished. I hope you guys don't make the same mistake, because the sound effects were awesome. But the dialogue did suffer as you're hearing. It wasn't a break point but when I first watched the trailer I noticed it A LOT. It got less problematic for me as I rewatched it. But you still might have a kneejerk reaction to it down the road.

If you ever need an ear to listen to the production prior to release, I'd be happy to give you guys my opinions. I've got several systems I can test it on.

Good luck with it!

Keith

Great, just great. I was gonna make a comment last night, but I was too damn tired.

Everything looks very rich in colour, the saber glows I think look great.

The lead women role..I must say I just dont dig. She acts to stuck up to be a Jedi/Sith which ever. I dont think it really works. It almost seems like she is TRYING to deliver the lines as if she were Count Doku. Thats just my thought though..

The space scenes were pretty sweet.

The scene at the end were the 2 actors jump through the window, it looked alright, but obviously 3d. Personally I think they should have made the actors hop through a window silly

All in all looks great, the odd thing here and there, but I am sure the whole movie will make up for it.

Absolutely amazing.

My only gripe is the compression on the trailer. It looks very blocky for an 18 meg file. I'd love to have a shot at doing a better compression.

Well, the funny thing is, and I have learned over the years, that one mans "great acting" is the other guys "overacted crap", and one guys "overacted crap" is the "fine method acting", etc. To get two people to agree on the quality of a performance is almost impossible.

For me, Zhanna, QBotU *is* this film. Yes, she is being the all-out bitch, but that's the idea. Of ourse, I've seen a lot more of her than you have but.... happy

Well at least it's the 2 actors jumping, and not 3D replicas of them! happy (That comes in the following shot) happy

I saw the stills on the website before the trailer about this, and was most impressed - it was even nicer to see it in live action! I send thee personal kudos.

Just as a slight animation note, the first X-wing that basically goes vertical bothers me a bit in that scene - I think the G-forces word hurt a little there!

In reply to Adam Bertocci, regarding the ascension gun shot toward the camera not being very "Star Wars"-ish:

There are shots in ANH, during the Death Star cell block escape, where an officer fires his laser blaster directly at the camera.

If it's the vertigo that troubles you, in AOTC there's a rather stylized (for Star Wars, anyway) shot of Mace Windu leaping from the balcony on Geonosis, and also when Coleman Trebor plummets to the ground after being shot by Jango Fett.
