im planning locations for an upcoming project this summer, and im wondering if the use of stock footage is possible for fanfilms. what im thinking of using is aerial photos of the city skylines of New York, Ottawa, London and other major cities, as well as just random locations to establish the location of the character in certain scenes and to give the appearance that international travel has taken place in the film. im also thinking of using stock footage for exterior building and plaza shots of easily identifiable places like Times Square or Trafalgar Square. if anyone can help with advice, it would be much appreciated. it would certainly make establishing shots easier!

Stock footage is, ordinarily, royalty free and legal to use. That's the whole point, isn't it?

Anyone seen the flash gordon with the beast man?

"AHHH YOU EAT WITH ME NOW!!!" -- The Wise Beastman

Whenever he summons the beasts it just shows stock footage of animals running around.

excellent. if youre keen on why im asking, just search for the Tomb Raider fanfilm thread a few pages back. im planning on doing this and i want to give the appearance that Lara is circumnavigating the globe in her little adventure. im still working on the story, and ive just begun location scouting for some scenes. im pretty sure i can pull off a tropical jungle locale using the small wooded area here at home...

The trick with using stock footage is that you may well have to dummy it down a bit to match your own footage. Most stock footage, particularly at pay sites like Artbeats, is shot on high-quality, high resolution cameras, that look a damn sight better than most of the equipment we use. Without adjusting it, it'll end up looking like stock footage, rather than something you may have shot yourself.
