Corrin - what's the deal with the shade and forest count out of curiousity?

I assume it's a running total of the number of entries shot in a forest, and the number of lightsaber shades entered in the contest.

I thought the shades had to do with sunglasses.

And if you're really NotTheEntry10Guys, how would you know whether or not Entry 10 will be re-released with additional effects? Huh? Huh?

Here is my opinion of the first 8 entries. More to follow later. Even though I entered, I am going to try and give an impartial review of my entry as well (and hopefully not give it away in the process). I realize that there is a wide varience in filmmaking experience, so I will also try not to be mean to people. But I will be honest about what I felt. I am also going to try and limit my comments to the choreography, unless other things realy need a few words. Thank you.

#1
This entry is nothing special. Way too many unused openings and moments where one combatant was waiting for the other to do something. The combatants were often too close to one another which choked off many of the swings. This one is the first entry where one person gets knocked down and the other stands there and waits for them to get up. See if you can count how many there are in this competition! (I see a drinking game for those of us old enough to do so!)

#2
This was the only entry that made me grin from ear to ear and laugh with joy. A very creative entry with the use of wires. . . and a couple of guys in the competition that are actually older than I am! Huzzah!!!

That said, the choreography was fun, but lacking in a sense of urgency. The combatants looked and felt like they were dancing with each other far too often. Also the most troubling aspect of the fighting for me was seeing that the two were WAY too close to one another for any of their strikes to me anything more than "stick bashing", in particular during the fastest exchanges. There were a few openings that were not exploited, but not many. Trenchcoat guy had an annoying tendancy to telegraph by looking directly at what he was going to swing at, but both actors really did a good job overall. I liked the sliding across the floor, and the kid at the end made for a cute "to be continued". (I see another drinking game!!!)

I also saw one of the best moves in the competition at 0:31. The flowing way t-shirt guy moved into that behind-the-back block made me say "Nice!" like nothing else in the other entries. This entry also wins my award for the best music. Bravo all around!

#3
OK, I must be honest. The first thing I thought of when watching this entry was that someone needs to help the tall kid with his posture. Seriously.

The action here was slow and ponderous. I think the tall kid had glue on his shoes because his feet almost never moved except to run around the puddle. Some blasters were used to decent effect, but why in the world did she stop shooting? Then when tall kid took care of her, he stood there and waited to get zapped. I am sorry, but I was just bored . A basic amateur looking effort.

#4
I could not understand what that guy was saying, could you? It was too soft. Also, is the guy in grey the same guy who was in black a few seconds later? Or is this an editing issue? Nice finger lock.

After that it all goes downhill. If you are looking for a perfect example of "stick bashing" look no further. Nearly the entire fight is comprised of useless knocking back and forth with the guy in black hopping around like a stilted bunny. There is really nothing worth looking at more than once. Nice little judo throw but really, who would drop a perfectly good lightsaber and kneel down in front of their (still armed) enemy to perform that move??? Move along, move along. Nothing to see here.

#5
"Rrrrrrr!" "Grrrrrrr!" I chuckled and shook my head. All anyone will ever have to say about this entry is "Rrrrrr!" and "Grrrrr!"

The main problem with this swordfight was the fact that there were too many openings that were outright ignored. Too many gratuitous spins coupled with slow swings. I could not believe anything in the fight after about 30 seconds. That backhand at 0:52 was not acted out at all, but the shots of sabers close to their faces was nice. Silly ending. "Rrrrrr!" "Grrrrrr!"'

#6
Well now, this was a good looking entry! Nice costumes, nice location and filming. Drama and pathos just drip off of the screen. I really liked the concept for this story. The first exchange was quick and realistic. An opening that was actually exploited! Love it. But the action is really coming when the Jedi in his despondence tries to kill himself, and the spirit/memory of his Jedi Master returns to basically slap him back to reality. A VERY interesting concept for a fight. The Master just completely schools our depressed Knight and gets him to choose life once again. Some nice moves, but the question bothering me is "who the heck is the person in the woods?"

The fighting was kind of stilted throughout. It would have been nice to see some longer and faster exchanges. But all in all, I really liked this entry. It was trying to do something outside just the choreography and for me makes it a really good little clip. However not one that should win. But I am going to keep this one on my computer. It gives me lots of thoughts and ideas. Thank you!

#7
Man, the drinking game is going strong, what with "to be continued" and waiting for someone to get up or turn around.

But don't get me wrong, this is a pretty decent entry. Some good fighting with some intensity (but somewhat low speed). A few decent moves here and there, but a bit too much stick bashing for my liking. The combatants are a bit stiff and let the movement come from the upper body far too often. I want to see them getting their body behind the swinging and cutting.

Unfortunately this entry suffers most from the fact that it is SO dark as to be hard to see a bunch of the action. Oh yeah, they are wearing black as well. A nice entry, but nothing terribly interesting.

#8
Now here is a good entry! A location that I wish I could have gotten hold of, a pair of purposeful fighters, well-used darkness, and good photography to boot. Some nice fighting going on with this one. Almost no obvious openings that are ignored. . . oh, except for knocking down red saber and pacing around him until he gets up again. Gotta drink there. The actors and the choreography really convey how the tables turn on red saber guy. One thing I do have to complain about is that right after the lights go back on (after going out dramatically yet inexplicably), the exchange starts off really stiff legged and slow. An ending with no payoff, but it is not a bad thing. All in all I am really impressed with this entry. Good stuff all around. A definite contender for the title in this competition.

<Everyone knows who's entry #10 is. Good riddance to it I say.>

Uh, why the bitterness? The thing that might have swayed votes unfairly in this submission's direction would have been using tools at their disposal that weren't available to the general public. Doesn't look like that was done. As a matter-of-fact, I'm VERY impressed that this entry does NOT have rendered blades. The #10 guys are playing very fair, methinks.

But, maybe I'm missing something. If so, I'm sorry. I just don't care for petty jealousy. "I HATE the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel." "Why?" "Because Michaelangelo painted it...that's not fair, he's TOO good!" (I say painted because I don't know the verb form of fresco)

And just for the record, I STILL think the most gorgeous shot of the whole contest is the left-panning track that starts the battle proper in #8. The framing is just great. #10 could have made use of some pulled back, wide-angle tripod shots to "ground" the action and give some visual variety, but that is admittedly nitpicking.

Without giving anything away... I - being the programmer - have access to the results that you guys don't.

The one you all think may be winning is actually not. It's up there, but there is serious competition.

I highly recommend that everyone go and cast thier votes!!

btw: I have't even voted myself. I haven't seen all the entries and I'm biased for having seen the results. So, I don't think I will be voting after all... sad

I haven’t read any of the other reviews yet, but I’m gonna save that for tomorrow. It’s getting pretty late over here.

    A couple of my favorites:

Number 2 was pretty cool. The Wire Work was original in a choreography contest, but that doesn’t necessarily has to be a good thing. It looked to me like they were thinking of a gimmick for their movie. If it was a Matrix fighting choreography contest, they would probably fit in more. Cool fighting, but not nearly enough sabers…

Number 6 had some good cinematography. I thought it was great that the master kept interrupting his apprentice’ suicide attempts with some cool moves. Took awhile before the fighting started, though…

Number 8 had a pretty good fight. What I didn’t get, though, was the light that went out all of a sudden. And then back on again without any of the guys doing something. Strange.
Overall good fighting. Fast… I liked that. Plus the Force Jump was pretty sweet…

Number 9 then. Fighting in the snow isn’t easy. So we should at least give them kudos for that. Also, the fight was pretty fast paced. So that worked for me to. What I didn’t like were the sticks that you guys used. They were pretty weak and bended rather quickly. Also they were a little short to make good sabers. But hey, that’s me. And this is a contest about choreography, and that was pretty good. Except, at the and it looked like you were stickbashing instead of trying to kill each other. That’s gonna cost you some points…

Ahh, Sweet number 10. This was some amazing stuff. I can watch this the entire day. You guys are great (choreographed) fighters. Very fast, very dangerous. Could’ve done without the slow mo, though and the guy in the brown jacket needs to work on his acting skills, but that’s besides the point… happy

Number 14. I really don’t want to get in a real fight with you guys, but your lightsaber fights are extremely slow. I could see every move coming a mile away. So try to hit eachother faster, next time. Also, don’t hesitate on cutting that guys head of. It took to long before you actually did it. Hurry up, already…

Number 16 is very cool. Had some pretty good moves in there. You guys need to work on your choking, though. Also, try not to bash the sticks together. Less bashing, more killing…

    17. Awesome fighting. Another one in the snow. Must’ve been winter. wink It was great to see an 1 on 1 on 1 fight. Can’t say I agreed with the backstabbing, but aside from that, very cool…

Number 18 is pwnage. Not because of the fighting (guys, seriously…) but because of the great humor. The smack in the face really cracked me up. Felt like I was watching Monty Python. Fantastic. Also, great choice of music. It’s been a while since I last heard that song. Now I can’t get that damn song out of my head. And even though it will probably not win this contest, it’s definitely a classic…

All I can say to 19 is: Dudes, make love, not war. Cool choice of music, though. Was that Final Fantasy? Can’t remember. It’s been a while since I last played. Anyway, fighting needs work. You guys were trying to get some cool twirls out of your sabers, but it just seemed like you guys started your lightsaber training only yesterday…

Number 21. What’s that? Father and son, Older brother and younger brother? Seriously, the kid’s got some sweet moves. Wouldn’t want to get into a fight with him. Also, pyrokinetics. That’s new. What do we call that? Force flame. Very cool fight, especially for a kid his age. Thumbs up…

Number 26. What the hell… Is that Bryan Singer? What’s he doing here? Fight was way too short. Also I didn’t like the fact that he had to use his lightsaber to get up. What are you? 80…

Another great one: 27. Great use of environment, guys. A lot of cool fighting and a lot of extras. I did find it a bit weird that all of the extras kept on doing their job even though you guys were fighting each other with LIGHTSABERS in the very same room. But that’s okay, you guys got a hot chick in your movie, so that’s gotta be worth some extra points for style. Just remember for the next time: Less of you, more of her… :P

    My top 3:

3: 21 - Great fighting kid, keep it up.

2: 27 - For their great use of environment.

1: 10 - Like, duh. This is without a doubt the very best entry that this contest has. The speed, the moves, everything...

Also I would like to congratulate (sp?) all of the participants(sp2?) for a job well done. I am entertained grin Can't wait for the next competition!!

I was under the assumption that the results of the poll can be viewed once you placed your vote.

At any rate, it's better this way. I wonder, durb, if you plan on displaying the full statistics of the polls? Now that would be a more interesting, though not necessary more meaningful, review.

Posted by DarthMeekAndMild: Honorable mention: #2, #17, #20.

Wow. Those just happen to be the ones lacking effects. Coincidence? I think not.

Check the thread title. CHOREOGRAPHY CONTEST!!

It just so happens that #2, #17, #20 all had awsome choreography. Seriously. Why don't you go start a FX contest because you are quite obviously only interested shiny lightsabers and what have you.

Entry 2 does not lack effects (ack double negatives employed!!!). It's pretty clear how much rotoscoping was completed with their entry.

While it's all a popularity contest, the reviews that matter are the ones individuals care about. Don't let it get to you so much, Chris_F.

As a film-submitting partipant in this contest that is not currently among the favorites in this thread, but certainly not in the bottom of the barrel, I must say that people can certainly be mean-spirited in their reviews.

I now understand why actors don't read their reviews - it can be very disheartening to put so much effort into something to only have it trashed or dismissed so easily.

That said, I thankfully have a pretty thick skin so I can deal with it.

However, I think people should stick to judging the choreography and not making personal assessments of people's posture, acting skills, appearance, etc.
