A question for any of the sound people here, would you suggest I begin editing the project using the 5.1 surround sequence (with the 6 tracks of audio and master 5.1 audio) or the normal 3 audio default track setting? I'm trying to prepare for sound editing, however I'm still laying down video. I set the audio to 5.1 surround in the sequence, however, today I was told not to do that because it'll get to complicated and just focus on editing it normally with the default 3 audio track setting. I'm new to this program, and 5.1 editing in general, if any of you are sound experts...advice...? Is it wise to edit in 5.1 surround from start to finish, or go with the normal 3 audio track default setting then do the 5.1 surround afterwards?
The instruction book doesn't really get into this subject. I moved my sequence into a regular 3 track audio setting and snippets of the sound didn't carry over. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Normally, you do your sound edit straight forward with dialogue in mono and sound effects/ambiences in stereo when needed. 5.1 should be left to a professional or at least experienced mixer with a tuned/calibrated 5.1 mixing studio/system. When you try to do it specifically during a sound edit or design (using a lot of guess-work most of the time), you can sometimes run into problems during mixing because of phasing and canellation anomalies that aren't as evident when you're editing in the sounds and manually placing/panning them...but they come up during final playback after mix. With today's ProLogic II decoding on most available home theater receivers, it does a pretty good job of creating an expansive sound field from a stereo source. You could try messing around with some short sample sound sequences with different settings to see how well things are placed in the surround field, especially specific directional effects. But again, real surround placement is usually left to the mixing and mastering stages. But I haven't used Premiere for anything, really (just AVID and FCP from the get-go, and ProTools for the sound), so I'm not all that familiar with its surround capabilities. But for now, I would stick with stereo and concentrate on the quality of the sound effects and editing, rather than the effect of surround sound.

I'm fairly sure that JediSpiff made a version of Planet With No Name in 5.1. Ask him?

I don't think there's a right answer - just tinker with it. I found the directional audio (for stuff like blasters, etc.) was much easier to do with the rubber-bands and keyframes on the timeline than actively with the mixer - as sounds moved too quickly to do it in real time.

I'm not sure that I'd put a lot of effort into a surround sound track again unless I've got a lot of noisy projectiles. For most stuff it really doesn't make much of a difference.
