Great thanks for the quick reply. I really like the new method and already prefer it about the old one. Works much faster for me.

Gee Zap, if you want an explicit computation to show the exact coefficients required to get expontential falloff, then let me know. But... like you said: no one is doing gamma corrections, so the colour-rendition is not linear, and fast blurs aren't gaussian blurs.

These lightsabers look better, but I'm having a problem making them:
At the begining, i make my black and white solid layers and put them underneath. I have the white layer selected, and when I try to mask the core, it wont let me. It doesn't make a mask at all. Is this because i'm using an old version (4.1)?

Also, i don't have the repeat edge pixels. Does this mean all my lightsabers will fade out near the edge of the frame, or is there any other way of preventing this?

Who me? grin

Rory: Some effects do not support 16bpc... but that's not the point. The point is to avoid colour banding when the lot of 8bpc images are mixed together and adjusted in colour. So long as this operation is done in 16bpc, you'll have no problems.

If you look at the saber glow falloff in this picture around Phi's face:
http://s94963366.onlinehome.us/Eclipse/SvJpics/shot09.jpg
you'll see the stepping we're trying to avoid. This was originally rendered out in AE 6.0 Std., which didn't have 16bpc support, and frustrated me to no end. It was a great relief to see it disappear when I upgraded to 6.5 Pro and switched to 16bpc.

Pretty good little tutorial Zap. I'll be recommending to TFN that when they host my tutorial, that yours be on the same page, or not far. It's very useful for those who want to roto via that method, and good for people just getting started and need to see how masking works. Pretty amusing too.

Hey thanks guys, glad you liked it.

It irks me that I forgot to show one cool thing which is often useful in fanning situations: You can select only one END of the saber, double click one of those points, and still get that cool "transform box" for the points, so you can take your quite normal rounded saber end and turn it into a "big fanning saber end" in just a couple of clickeroo-drag-pull-smile moves.

I think you could easily combine Zap's and Ryan's methods together. Create the lightsaber core by rotoscoping directly onto the footage, and make the glow layers using the adjustments. Just a suggestion, although I am actually taking serious consideration on combining these methods for my rotoscoping.

Working on rotoscoping my LCC4 Entry 3. A couple more
fight scenes to do, then the closeups and wide shots.

And you know what else? You could actually combine both methods. At the same time. Imagine, huh? A m a z i n g, innit?

I mean, who would have thunk that one method (which is only about actually rotoscoping masks) and another method (which is only about using rotoscoped masks to create glows) would ever go together, huh? Who would have thunk? wink

I mean, some day someone will even come up with other things that go together like... like... bacon and... and... and.... eggs.... or.... girls and... and... and... no wait. Forget that. wink
