I see how you mentioned every little detail. For example: How not to mess up duplicating a layer.

Good job again, especially with the last few minutes of tips beyond the effect itself.

And BTW, I always thought your last name was pronounced more like the tricky spelling. More like w-i-ber, not w-e-ber. Just saying... yea...

My guess is Ryan developed this on his own over these many years of lightsaber geekdom. I slipped off my desk and hurt my elbow at the ILM comment tongue Pretty cool Ryan, definately a nicer workflow when it comes to tweaking the rotoing itself. I might have to put this to use on my Choreography Entry happy

You said that sometimes they look this way or sometimes they have that aspect, etc. Most shots I don't think looked too good, some looked quite nice. The shots are fairly inconistent in terms of look, and quality (meaning good-ness), is what I meant.

Well, I thought it was okay, and was wondering if you violated any clause of your NDA with LucasArts to bring us these secrets.

You know LucasArts is the games company, right?

Not the point at all, man-sig thief!

*AHEM* Back on topic:

There was a bit of artifacting/noise in the background of the "footage" is it that way it really is, or is that due to the compression?

Hey ryan, If you work at LucasFilm, Did you do the lightsabers in the ROTS videogame? Because honestly those sucked, Not to offend or anything, But they looked extremly over saturated and not in the right shade. doh!

Ryan, nice method.

Curious, though, am I the only person that sees the benefits of rotoing in the footage layer?

Try this; add a mask to your footage. Now double-click this layer to bring up the footage window (instead of what you normally are looking at which is the comp window).

When in the FOOTAGE layer you have much greater/speedier workflow for the actual rotoing. You can box-select a whole end of the saber (which is godsend if you do 6 pointers with proper beziers like I do) which you cannot do in the comp layer (the same mouse move to box-select multiple points (click and hold outside the points you want to select - drag a box over them, release) would in the comp window instead mean "move the layer I clicked").

I find this enhances my roto speed tenfol than struggling with AE's "numerous misconceptions of where I clicked and what I meant when I clicked there" you get when you are working in the comp window. And no, not even locking all the non-roto layers puts me in the same useful mode as in the fotoage window.

When I am DONE, I simply add a "fill" effect to my footage layer and fill it with the core colour and then I do stuff very similar to ryans stuff here.

Anyone ever tried this? Or does newer AE's (I'm still in 5.5 land!!) have a mode which makes rotoing in the comp window bareable, wich no mistaken click interpretations and proper box-select of multipl points (NOT stupid shift clicking, that takes ages)
