Uh, yeah, that sucks. Gaussian Blur does not appear to be capable of repeating edge pixels in AE.

what version of After Effect were you using Ryan? I have Adobe After Effects 6.5 Professiol.

6.5, but (as far as I'm aware) everything except Guide Layers can be done in earlier versions.

I very much liked this. I'm a big fan, now. Reinspired me to keep rotoscoping, instead of giving up. Thank you, Ryan.

Good work bud, my favorite was having fully rendered sabers and you can still move the mask with the glow and you dont have to worry about moving the other five layers. I was wondering when this was going to happen. grin I know I will be using this in the near future or a variation of it for rotoing sabers.

Well, the gaussian blur thing doesn't really have anything to do with the tutorial method. We were just talking about the features of fast/gaussian.

Hey Ryan,
thanks for sharing your new method with the rest of us. I really like the new flexibility that this method offers. It´s always great to get immediate results without having to change half of the effect again. Also being able to save a template with the effect is a great thing, a great time saver. I most likely use this new method for our current project. But I gotta say, I was really shocked to hear that you only recently discovered what for adjustment layers are. I really thought you figured AE out as much as one could say you almost invented the program wink

Oh and the ILM reference was hilarious, had me laughing for almost the rest of the tutorial.

Btw, I think about making the exact the same tutorial for our German film forum (of course referencing you / your website) so those who don´t speak English can also profit from this new method. Just checking with you if that´s okay.

Even though it's faster in the sense of fixing a roto mistake(just changing one layer instead of fixing and re-duplicated all 3 and adding blur again and etc.)
Well you've always been able to do that, since you can just pre-comp the layer with your actual mask on it, and reference that pre-comp in the other layers.

I think you can use expressions as another way to acheive the same. (Never tried that, tho)

I feel there's just more inbetween steps...but hey I'm an old dog. I will try this out when I finish filming again next week.
Actually the coolest bit is that each new blur builds on the former, rather than just blurring the core, which is actually desirable for a ton of reasons.

Zap, I saw your tutorial and it was very entertaining. You sure have a funny personality.

One tries, one tries. Did anyone else watch it, or should I delete it off the server?

fire posted:
But I was hoping to see the end result of your version of the tutorial.
It wasn't about end results, only about actual rotoing itself.

fire posted:
Do you copy the mask to a white layer? Do you just increase the brightness till it's white?
Neither, add the Render->Fill filter and fill to white.

I actually did do a "version II" of the tutorial with more in depth talk, but it became 145 megabytes somehow (dont ask wink ) and I will try to compress that to QT decently somehow. It actually mentions that, plus talks keyboard shortcuts.
