Btw, when's the baby due?
(The excercise ball. Took me a while)
How about video tut?
Bah. If you have AE 6.5, you can download the project
here
. (240 kB). Really, tweak to taste and animate the bejeeburs out of it is all it was. Render it out, have a look at the effect in real time, then go back and fix stuff.
Can we see a still of the footage before any post was run on it
Sure.
No colour correction
Colour corrected and cropped:
and cause all sorts of ugly banding artifacts
I find using 16 bpc eliminates all those problems. Blow outs have to be tempered with careful opacity selection and blurring. I find if I "need" to use Screen to get the effect "right", something's wrong in the lower layers, and a little tweaking will fix it. Add + eLin is probably the most correct, but I'm not so much concerned about doing it "right" as doing it without spending cash.
If you want to do it right... Or Linear Dodge, which is sorta kinda the same thing-ish.
I usually use Linear Dodge - but I just did some tests with frames from this and could not discern a difference between in and add. As for the strobe rhythm... If there was someone to help me shoot this, I would have had them dial the strobes erratically. Looking at the keyframes though, they're not as rhythmical as you might think. Having two helped a bit.
great... (a) face... (b) light
(a) I'm beautiful!
(b) *Phew* I was concerned it would be too dark on your monitor.
I wouldn't call it force lightning
Didn't you read my disclaimer?! The " " are there for a reason.
the very last frame was more like spider web
I prefer to think of it as "looking down the barrel". There's a similar such shot when Palps zaps Yoda in ROTS. Since I don't have the bootleg, I can't really guage how close I got... but yeah... prolonging that shot was asking for trouble. I used a digital zoom and motion blur to sell the "depth" of the event, but getting the lighting to look like it was actually spraying out of my hand towards the screen was a little difficult. Were it in a film, that's where you would cut the way Lucas did. After all - at that point we're more interested in the person getting zapped than the aggressor.
And
here's
(13 MB) a 960x720 version that represents the native resolution of the project, since I used a digital zoom to get the pull out at the end.

Just a quick question. I really have no idea when it comes to color correction, so what I am trying to do right now is take the two pics you posted and I am trying to make the color line up. What is it that you use to tweak the color? Channel Mixer, Color Balance, or a combination of both?

RE: "Force" Lightning - Test and Tutorial
The best tool I've ever found for color correction is the Selective Color, but it's only available in Photoshop. Kind of sucks, because the functionality would be the same in AE and it wouldn't be difficult to tranfer it into the program.
You know, now that I think about it, Selective Color may be a transferable plug-in. Like P+S Ripple, or something. Checking.
For AE correction, I don't know what he used, but usually Color Balance and Curves are the tools to use. Occasionally Levels and Brightness and Contrast.

I used Hue/Saturation and Curves.
I also have a really sophisticated colour corrector from Synthetic Aperture... but damned if I know how to use it.

That was pretty f'ing awesome Spiff.
we get a big glob of lightning looking all glob-like and globbing towards its opponent, where it forms a glob and globs on them.

yeah, i do that.
the sounds aren't really force lightning sounds, but the visuals aren't really force lightning visuals. it has a sort of tesla coil look to it, and the sound fit that.
reminds me of a deleted scene on the x2 dvd, of jubilee in the museum
