I bet one night we were home alone, we all did exactly what Star Wars Kid did.

Yeah well the difference is we didn't videotape it.

Is it just me or does the "lightsaber" he's holding remind anyone else of some of old school nickelodeon slime?

Ok so it was nunchucks instead... with my shirt off... with "The Power" by Snap playing loudly... and it got leaked to people I didn't want to see it (that being anyone but myself). Thank God this was in the early 90's or it would be on YouTube... and no, the footage no longer exists. I'm not that dumb.

If I remember correctly some of his friends took it and put it up on some torrent sites.
He and his parents weren't happy, I think they even pressed charges.
I think that's what happened anyway, I cant remember all the details.

There was other home movie footage on the tape. I forgot that the footage in question was still on the VHS tape (albiet at the very end) and loaned the tape to an aquaintance who was into making home movies. He watched the entire tape with his friends. I was not amused.

24fps?
Their tv operates at approximately 25fps. This is because they use DC, which runs at 50 cycles a second, as opposed to our AC (alternating current) which runs at about 60 cycles a second. Back when televisions first came out, the phosphorus screens couldn't retain an image for a whole 1/30th of a second. So the decided to "interlace" the frames, shooting every other line of a frame at 1/60th of a second, in accordance with our electrical system. Later on, they were able to make televisions retain an image longer, but the interlacing had become standard. It all actually runs at 29.97fps (drop-frame) because the electrical current doesn't cycle at exactly 60/second. It's more like 59.94 cycles. So when it gets to that frame that has less than a cycle to run, it drops it and moves on.
At least, that's what I remember from my college days....

Can someone please tell me the best way of achieving the effect that is the result of sabers locking together? How would I go about making that flare of light?

I, personally--and I'm sure a good portion of others on this board do too--use Dorkman's flare found on Ryan-w.com and then set it to add where the sabers collide.
But that's the basic idea, really. You just need a flash over a black background (you could make it with, like, knoll light factory or something like that) and then bring it into AE and ADD it over the footage.

ryan's explanation of contact flashes can be found here
http://www.ryan-w.com/ryan-w/tutorials_sabers2.html
and if you don't want to make your own flash you can use dorkman scott's using the link ryan provides

I use dorkmans flash when the sabers collide, yes. But when they are locked, as in being pressed together for a certain amount of time, how do you achieve that flare of constant light?
