DV footage was deartifacted by Spiff's method (I think...not totally sure I implemented the blurs correctly) this output was then pre-rendered back to 25i uncompressed.

25i footage interpreted with "preserve edges" on.

50 fps composition used to separate fields
frame blending set to "pixel motion"
time stretched to 800%

new comp created at 25fps, 50fps comp inserted and time-stretched 200% to retain all frames.
h.264 compressed and uploaded.

That's pretty rad.

There are some errors on the sabers though, but it's digital art.

Thanks. The PC did most of the work. whistling

The fastest moving objects throw the algorithm off,
and fanning looks really weird...there's some faster action that I deliberately left out...

I just thought I'd try something with the footage I had around.
NTSC footage has 10 more images per second,
and can probably be pushed a little further.

I also wonder if I've done the optimal de-artifacting.
Spiff's instructions in the "everything" thread
are good for NTSC, but not entirely clear on PAL.

Anyway, I figure the blades are being painted out and flash effects could hide some of the other flaws.
So this might be workable with the right footage.

Okay, that's a LOT cooler than I would've done the contact flares.

I agree, Vapes, on the cool factor, which is why I tossed it up here.

I was originally going for brighter, but the source video of those plasma arcs (yes: real live plasma arcs, of all things!) was so nice I just overlayed 6 or 8 of them and smudged that with the saber aura technique. Cannonical flashes are what, one frame maybe two? That's more than a second when "shot" at 400 fps and played back at 25. I figured I had some time to really over-do the effect.

Are there any in-universe descriptions of what produces the flash, or what the physics might or should be? The foley is mostly electrical noises, so home-made lightning (the device is called a "Jacob's Ladder") seemed like a good first thing to try. Then again, it looks a bit dangerous and thus not entirely 'right' to me.

Looks like a ForceFX Saber to me. I'm more eager towards the burnmarks, but other than that, I don't get it.

The light's practical. Look at the bits of green on the shelf and chair. Either Ryan's gotten REALLY good, or this is a picture of an FX saber. The uber-bright halo around the core suggests it's so, though I'm not 100% he didn't tweak it.

From what I can make out of the hilt, It's a custom saber, not Force FX. I still think the lighting is practical though... with some possible tweakage.

I'm gonna go with that. Playing devil's advocate, it looks like the light could be post work... It kind of seems like the light would be spilling a lot more than that, but that could just be me.
