Music doesn't need to be complex or complicated, as long as it sounds good.

There's about a 100 topics/threads that cover that effect, and IIRC, the effect was done with roto and a glow plugin for the movies.

Oh, Fleischer. How we forget.

For the PT, it was done with computer methods, but for the OT it was done straight on film. The technique drawing the core digitally is very true to the old method in spirit, creating a matte for where the blade will be. However, instead of applying a digital plug-in, they actually painted in the glows for each frame. I believe there were multiple layers comped in for the diffusion of the glow.
I'm not really positive about the specifics, but that's the basic run-down.

Are the Custom Saber Shop modules all hollow? Can I build a stunt saber with them?

The Custom Saber Shop has it's own forums. Just letting you know. My name over there is ARKM.

Yes, they are hollow and are primarily designed to take electronics however I don't see why one couldn't use them as stunt sabers. I believe their blade holders for EL (electroluminescent) sabers use a 3/4" inside diameter which would work great with Randomsabers carbon fiber blade accessory kit. The blade holders for LED sabers have a 1" inside diameter.

ebay is also a great resource for stunt sabers. You can often find them with no reserve and with a very low starting bid (like $1).

Thanks Henchman. I'm digging through their forums now (missed them at first because I was too busy drooling). As long as I know they're hollow I can make adapters. Their modular system looks REALLY cool.

I seriously doubt ILM used Shake for the sabers. Seriously.

If you don't know, don't claim to. If you're basing the knowledge on the fact that Shake kicks ass, you should know that Shake is discontinued, and AFAIK, it's beeing slowly replaced by The Foundry's Nuke. Shake is powerful, sure, but IMHO, After Effects can do more these days, layer-based or not, it's getting pretty damn good these days, and shake is only getting older. As for Blender, concerning the fact that it's free, it does a damn decent job.

IIRC, the blades were painted(roto'ed), and a guy wrote a plugin to deal with the glows. They didn't necessarily have to even use an application.

The Shake saber chapter in The Encyclopedia of Visual Effects was written by an ILM artist who did sabers in the prequels, and his method is very precise and Shake specific. Shake is discontinued, but no less useful, and there is talk of a Shake update (or a replacement called Phenomenon) coming at WWDC along with the Final Cut Studio update.
