How do you make a footage shot in a forest look more jungle- like?

Jungle means:

-green, saturated leaves
-unease, created by the jungle's impenetrability

For the latter I've already found out: You have to lower the brightness and up the contrast, until you get really harsh lines and dark areas. The eye must not allowed to have a spot to 'rest on'.

I can hardly cope with the first one. Hours of trying to change the color balance, key out the leaves and replace them with more (greenly) saturated leaves have never really led to any convincinv result. Sure! It works far better than the untouched footage but somehow I don't get the jungle feeling.

Then I watched Lost, again, jealously being amazed by the jungle- feeling that is pretty well- delivered in there. Suddenly I noticed that in many scenes there seems to be a really low amount of blue [as in RGB]. The characters and the wood is kind of red, the rest is pure, saturated green. I tried to emulate this quality but somehow I failed. Whenever I lowered the blue value the image wouldn't go red (for the trees and persons) and green (for the leaves and stems) but YELLOW instead, since green+red becomes yellow in RBG colors.

So what am I supposed to do? Any ideas?

Add some layers -- This is just one way to do somthing like what you are asking...

1.) Orange(color)(15%)
2.) Blue(subtract)(30%)
3.) Duplicate layer (soft light)(gussian blur 10-20)

Layers

Old

New

I'd say keep playing with the contrast and lowering the brightness, and you'll eventually get what you're looking for... the color grading is unessesary, if you bring the lighting all the way down it has a tendancy to filter out the not green elements... not sure if I've explained that very well

I'm going to see what I can do with the pic Eamon posted.

Edit: Just did it.

Before:

After A:

After B:

Edit #2: Actually, since you mentioned Lost, I think this version better nails the "Lost look".

Edit #3: Okay, now I think this version nails it better than any of the previous ones.

I'm using Ulead Meida Studio Pro which certainly does not have as many effects like After Effects. I think I can emulate the effect that you posted last, though. It's just more saturation, isn't it?

Anyway. Now that's what LOST looks like. Here are stills from Lost:

Here are some rarely compressed (and deinterlaced) seconds of my "forest":
Mpeg4; 1.1 MB

I was using an indoor white balance for these shots, which tints everything in blue.

Ripley,

Regarding that original shot of Eamon's--you could always try adding "foreground" to your shot physically... place some false yet convincing shrubbery in the foreground just to give you some of the depth you're seeing in the "Lost" shots... if you look at the first three "Lost" shots that you provided (well actually ALL)... other than the post contrast/brightness, etc. effects that everyone gave which are really cool...

...you can see that all that Eamon's shot is really lacking--is "thick" foreground. This will help with that "cluttered" / "enclosed" feel.

Don't you think my shot was enclosed enough? I play around with "blury stuff in the foreground" in most of my shots, actually.

I'm not wondering about the LOST look here, just putting that out there, having said that; I really like the way this looks Eamon. I was looking for a way to give stills and/or clips that professional type grading look. Nice.

Looking at the "lost" shots, my first thoughts are that you're going to need more blue too.

I know it's suppose to represent the LOST look but when I saw Darthness final pic, the first thing that popped into my head was "DREAM SEQUENCE EFFECT".
