Really?
We sent yours out before Zap's.
Which quite demonstrably arrived.
And, incidentally, I am listed top of "producers" on the RvD2 IMDB page only it's only 50% actually me... some "other" Håkan Andersson did the f/x for Kenny Starfighter (a rather amusing Swedish spoof of superhero/space hero genre)

Ours arrived today and we just ordered a few weeks ago. Doesn't look like it had any trouble with the border (whoo "gift"), so Laz's must be lost in the aether.

I present, My son watching RvD. He doesn't even care about the camera at all, and is even startled once the credits kick in.

Phi and I have watched through most of the DVD now. I was very impressed with the music production and the patience and commitment to quality of all involved personnel. Quite the uncompromising squad you assembled!
I found it interesting how long production actually was for such a short film. I know that all of the production schedules for the works I've been involved with have been simply too short and rushed to achieve the quality present in RvD2, but at the same time it strikes me that the footage yield per time spent on RvD2 was quite a bit lower than I would have expected.
What aspects of production do you think slowed you down, and what would you do next time to improve efficiency in order to facilitate an even more ambitious sequence? It strikes me that you need a dedicated producer.

Well, I know that for myself, my time was divided (or, perhaps monopolized would be more appropriate) by work. Spending 10 hours a day with my nose against screens with After Effects on it makes it hard to come home and, in whatever time I have, to open After Effects back up and get more work done. Mike, on the other hand, blasted through almost all of the saber roto in a small handful of weeks.
To be honest, though, we had a good idea of how long it would take us, and I don't think anything in particular caught us off guard. RvD2 was a labor of love hobby project that we knew would have to fit itself into, and around, the rest of our lives. But it's not something we really wanted to delegate work on if we could do stuff ourselves. As much work as it was, and as much time as it took, we wanted to do all the effects, seeking help only with things we didn't have the skill or experience in doing ourselves (3d) and that's the way we like it. We were pretty well organized, and once we decided on a release and a schedule, we were able to keep things on track and get everything done that needed to be, including a pretty quick timeline on all the music. I guess, I'm not sure any part of the production "needed" to be quicker.

I think he's talking about the actual production, or shooting, schedule.
There were three factors that I think made us move slower than one might expect, such that we had eight days to shoot and yielded a 6.5 minute final cut, after jettisoning entire sequences and shooting literally until we had to leave for the airport.
The first is that we were doing it at a fairly leisurely pace, at least in the beginning. We had full run of the place from sundown to just before sunup, approximately ten hours every night. There were only four of us, just a group of friends hanging out, so we were just enjoying the process as we went. We were in the mindset of "RvD took us four six-hour days to shoot at a similar leisurely pace, this will be no problem." Also because it was just the four of us, and not a big crew with rented equipment on a rented location, there was no time-pressure in that sense. We've since had the experience of having to haul ass on a project and I think it will benefit all future projects we do.
The second factor was the heat. It was Atlanta in the dead of summer. It was easily upwards of 90 degrees, 100% humidity -- and that was outside at night -- PLUS we were filming in a tortilla factory. All those shiny metal things around us were ovens that had been running non-stop for the last 14 hours. The factory was concrete and not well-ventilated. It was stifling hot and filming a fight scene was exhausting. We wound up needing to take much more frequent breaks than I think we otherwise would have. You'll notice that our choreography videos are, in some places, performed with much more speed than the film itself; we got into the heat and it just slammed us down.
But, that brings me to the third factor: we're sort of perfectionists. We know what we want to see and we spend the time it takes to get it done. On RvD1, we took half an hour throwing my glasses at the camera trying to get them to land at the right angle within the inch-wide depth of field, because that was the shot we wanted. There are three people involved in the choreography -- the two fighters, and the camera (itself two people in some cases) -- and if any one of them screwed up or wasn't quite up to snuff, we'd go again. The heat made some performances look crummy so we'd keep reshooting until we got it right. There would come a point where we'd decide something was as good as we were going to get it, and move on, but mostly we'd keep at it until it worked as well or better than we imagined.
I think that's the most important thing. "Footage yield" is more than what winds up in the final film; on average I think we shot about a 20:1 ratio.
Ultimately we got everything we needed, and the things we cut were to the benefit of the film, I think. If we'd done everything we'd wanted to I think the film would have been far too long. I think we could definitely tighten up production a little bit so that it's more focused and less leisurely, but I still think it's good to have the time to get it right, and even on professional films I think I'll be insisting that each fight scene gets enough time to really do it right.

Yes indeed. 'twas this I was referring to, and I think you answered it well. By no means would I want people to compromise perfectionism.
Presumably the ideal would be to get the shooting ratio down to 10:1 or 5:1. I think this is probably what puts the best stuntmen and action stars in such high demand, is that their ability to reproduce a 'perfect' performance is right up there - leaving it only to the director and cameraman to tweak it. Sort of like what was seen at Capital Records while Gordy was conducting the pro musicians. It gets to the point where the execution isn't the challenge, and time goes primarily into getting the exact artistic feel desired.
