Hello! I'm not sure what kind of response I'm going to be getting with this, but...

I've typed up the first draft for a little project. As the title states, it's going to be a parody on all those political commercials called 'Vote No on Order 66'. The basic story is that a bunch of Jedi are making a commercial to try and stop Order 66 by educating the public about what it REALLY does. Here's what I need help with:

-Compositing. Most, if not all of the footage will be shot blue or green screen, since there aren't any suitable Jedi Temple locations nearby. There will also be some basic lightsaber work

-Actors; namely, as many Jedi as I can get my hands on, ranging in age from kindergarten to middle-aged. Being able to furnish your own costume is a plus. No acting experience needed, but you will need to be able to keep a straight face.

-LOCATION: Seeing as how my current residence is an apartment, there is no place to set up said green screen. I need to find somewhere where a large green screen background can be set up.

-CG artists/matte painters: for the Jedi Temple; mainly interior shots

The rest of the crew (lighting, sound, camera) has already been taken care of. It would be best if the Jedi were from the general Inland Empire area.

Just to let everyone know in advance, this is not going to be a professional quality production. The camera is, in short, crappy. This is also my first attempt at anything resembling a fanfilm. I'm going to need a lot of help.

There is no set premiere date, but I'd like to have it up on YouTube by Election Day 2008. If that is impossible, it will be pushed back to the 2010 elections.

Thanks, and MTFBWY!

Check here for a local public access station. They normally have green screens and cameras that you can use for free. You normally just have to do a training course or something, and then Bam! You have a free greenscreen.

You could try to find a local 501st garrison and ask for some help from them. 501st members seem to be pretty willing to partake in fan filming.

As for the visual effects parts, RLM may be able to help (if there were a website that would have been a link up there, but alas, not yet). If you're interested, send a PM to ElectroFilms.

Jedi are generally Rebel Legion.

My experience with the Legion was....less than pleasant. But it really depends on the base you're dealing with. And I'm a member now, so what the hell do I know?

Thanks for the tips! happy I didn't know you can use a place with greenscreen for free! Cool!
Hmm...looks like the closest one would be in San Bernardino. tired I'll keep an eye on that.

Good idea about the RL. Maybe I'll post a message on their boards.

In response to the question, I live in Victorville. If you don't know where that is, look at a map of Southern California and find the 15 freeway. I'm somewhere between San Bernardino and Barstow, right in the Mojave Desert.

UPDATE!!!

Costume design, set design, and screenplay are all done. I've got just about half the Jedi I need; mostly I need Padawans and Younglings now, plus several clone troopers and a few civillians. Still need a compositor and a CG artist.

At the moment I'm in the process of storyboarding and location scouting. I'm planning on filming three different locales; Tatooine (desert), Dantooine (meadow), and Corellia (forest lake). All of the locations are within thirty minutes of home, but I still need to call and find out the hours, and if they'll let me film there.

For details please visit the website in my signature bar. Thanks!

-Cara

UPDATE!!!

Since the storyboards were more or less a flop, I made an animatic to lay out my shots and some of the action.

Casting is almost done. All I need now are a couple Padawans, the Younglings, the Civillians, and of course the clones. I went and posted on the 501st message boards, but it's been three days and no one has said so much as sneezed at it. raised_brow Oh, well. I'm not really going to start worrying until March. If no one says a word by then...I'm in trouble. worried

As a member of the 501st myself, I can only speak for myself when I say this but we get a lot of requests (in general) and as you know time can be very precious as you get older especially when families are involved.

Be sure to show them what you have thus far from your previous works (if any) to pre-production on this movie, including animatics, storyboards, scripts, etc. They aren't going to get involved in some no direction project that might not see the light of day. It's just like it is with anyone here. They want to see what you've done so far, and they want to know you're serious. They don't have time to play around in some backyard movie.

If you aren't living and breathing this movie, and you aren't treating it like a commercial project (eventhough it's not)..then chances are they will not participate.

If they do not respond, it's not a personal jest against you..it's just that we're busy people also and many of these 501st members are just as picky about their costumes as they are about the movies and events they participate in.

Oh, okay! Oops. blush I geuss I'm just paranoid that if I post my script up for all the world to see, someone will steal it and make it before I can. Not that I'm implying that the 501st would (God forbid! shock ), but that someone just casually browsing the boards might.

The script, sure I'll put it up now. The storyboards...ehhh, let's just say I couldn't draw my way out of a paper bag. The script has changed since then, too, so they don't match the action anymore. sad The animatics show the action pretty well (as well as the framing), but it's embarrassing to be making animatics out of *gulp!* Lego stop-motion. worried

Unfortuntely this is my very first production, so I have no experience. I do have some two or three years' practice shooting and editing. I will make an attempt to make this as professional as I can.

Based on what you've stated above, I doubt you'll hear from your local 501st. I'm sorry to have to say it, but it's very unlikely you'll get their support on this type of project (at this time). You should probably not count on them participating at this point. Try something smaller for now, then work your way back up to this particular film. There's nothing to say you can't come back to it later on. But you really need to develop your skills and think smaller at this point.

Ouch.

This is about as small as I CAN think at this point. sad
Reminds me of my job search. They don't want to hire me unless I have experience, but I can't get experience unless someone hires me. blush

What I'm saying is to come up with a much simpler script. Something you can produce that doesn't need a lot of cast members. That doesn't need a lot of effects. Perhaps a short comedy sketch or drama. Then once you have something to show, you'll be able to pitch a larger movie like what you're trying to currently pitch to the 501st. They might be more accepting at that point if you have a showreel.

Kinda like a demo reel for animation students, eh?

Well maybe I could do the majority of the filming now, put it on hold, do a couple small projects, then show the results to the 501st so I could do their scenes with pickup filming later on.

What will likely happen is you shoot scenes now then find out later you've progressed as a filmmaker and ultimately find the scenes need to be reshot because you could have done them better. I'm not saying don't shoot the scenes, but it's highly likely things will change before you come back to it.
