I agree. If only they could figure out how to make more Michael Bay-eqse movies.

Well, the first seven minutes which were posted online were a hideous, hideous mess of bad filmmaking choices and bad performances. I can't imagine the rest of the more than two hours of the film were much improved, and everyone I know with an agreeable taste in movies that did bother to see it confirmed that suspicion for me.

Well, the first seven minutes were not that good. The movie improves vastly after that. At least for me. I suppose I'm easily entertained. Oh well.

I loved the whole thing, but I'm biased in a number of ways.
First, I was an addicted fan of the cartoon when I was a kid, next as the parent of a 6-year-old son (who has a renewed addiction to hot wheels cars & tracks), and of course as someone with "patriotism" to the place where the opening and closing race sequences were created.
In a way, I thought the film was actually a refreshing departure the typical action blockbuster formula. Rather than a lone (typically American) hero out to save the world, this was a personal story of a whole family, working together to uphold their own integrity and ideals against the temptations, corruption and attacks of big money.
Most of all, I took my wife & kids to the theater in the hopes of seeing a fun, roller coaster paced live-action cartoon and we all had a blast! Very much looking forward to buying it on Blue-ray as soon as it's out.
Beyond the story, I'm also a fan of pushing creativity in new ways, which this film certainly did.
As you watch, remember that there is no Mach 6 ... ever. In fact, the only "live" car in the whole show is the Mach 5 ... and even that was only used for a few shots.
So, even close-ups of Speed climbing in and out of the car .. surrounded by a crowd of people ... it's all greenscreen, roto and CG. Same is true of reflections on driver's helmets and visors. These are just the little things beyond the overt environmental creations.
Have fun.

In fact, in its opening weekend it made $11 million more than David Fincher's ZODIAC made in its entire run. That's how it works, friends. Sometimes great movies are beloved and popular, sometimes they are only beloved. Sometimes trash gets buried, sometimes it gets its own private island in the Bahamas just to use for storage. We as film enthusiasts should probaly start evolving beyond the ancient superstition that these things are important or meaningful. What happened here is the Wachowskis made a strange movie that has not immediately caught the attention of billions of people. Life goes on.
But Speed Racer is trash and deserves to get buried. The system does still work.
Besides, I'm not talking about the popularity of trash (which is still relatively low), but the fact that the studios keep MAKING it.
The studios have dared to claim that the movie business is in a "slump" and people just aren't going to movies anymore. It's not because people don't want to go to movies, they don't want to go to THE MOVIES YOU'RE MAKING.
That seems to be right where the film industry was back in the 60's and 70's. Then, the studios decided to recruit new, fresh, young talent (previously only available at film schools, but now all over the internet) which brought about the likes of Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsesse, Lucas, etc.
Looks like it's a good time to be trying to break in.

I'd like to see a dramedic short film about a young man who breaks the law in Kalamazoo, Michigan that makes it illegal to serenade your girlfriend.

Yes but who is the studio, Mr. Scott? Businessmen, lawyers and bankers. They grow and pick and market and mulch and package a product just like it was canned spam. They're the guys who green light films... not directors, not writers, not fans. We're too saturated with Hollywood 'production values' to realize they're ultimately hollow without a thought-provoking tale supporting it.

I know that no matter how I phrase this, Mike will not go along with it. (In fact, I expect him to respond with the way he would do it instead).
Imagine you are a person with a lot of money. Someone comes up to you and tells you about a product they want to make for you, using your money. Does it sound profitable? Does it sound like a sure thing? If the answer isn't a guaranteed yes, then you disregard the person asking to use your money and go on with your life as normal.
Now imagine this happens daily, many times a day. You will quickly ignore what could be an interesting and unique product in favor of something that you know will get your money back and turn a profit.
That's how the system works. Well, sort of, the people who greenlight these projects still don't know what the hell they are doing most of the time. How else do you explain Catwoman or Elektra?

No, I'm well aware of all of that, and I'm not blinded to the fact that most of these films are hollow and brainless. In fact, that was the point I was making, so I'm not sure why you seem to be under the impression that your viewpoint is an opposing one.
Cramer posted: I know that no matter how I phrase this, Mike will not go along with it. (In fact, I expect him to respond with the way he would do it instead).
Look, I know full well how the system works. I've read enough books and had enough industry conversations to know that.
But is that the way it should work? No.
The alternative is not the way I would do it, it's the way I have done it and plan to continue doing it. I've put plenty of my own money into projects that weren't a sure thing -- in fact several projects that were sure to never make money -- just because I wanted to make them. As I get more money, I plan to do more of the same, and hopefully support other artists who can't get a break because they're not trying to make "the next Iron Man".
As Laszlo said, the problem is that the town is run by the businessmen and not by the lawyers. Hollywood used to be a town of risk-takers, and now it's a town of -- to paraphrase Billy West -- people attempting to catch lightning by running towards where it struck last. And then they wonder why the movies keep tanking. It's not the audience. It's the movies.
Look, I could go on and on with a manifesto of how I would (and perhaps will ) do it if I ran Hollywood, but I'll just paraphrase Walt Disney (because I can't find the exact quote): "I don't make films with an eye towards making money. I make films with an eye towards a good story well told; the money will follow."
I would personally say: I try to make movies that I would want to see, and I've discovered that "the audience," more often than not, wants the same things I do.

Heh, my mom is now a heroes fan. I decided that I was gonna watch the episodes again, which she wasn't to happy about it, but she stayed to watch to. Only got to episode four before she had to head to bed, and she made me stop watching them so that she wouldn't miss anything...

I wasn't defending the system in any sense of the word. I was just putting it out there for those that didn't understand what we were talking about. I just wanted to throw the disclaimer out there up front because I knew if I didn't it would look like I was trying to convince you of something.
Trust me, I'm on your side of the fence when it comes to the view of Hollywood and the business it is. I want to change it as much as the next guy; I just try to understand how it works now, and how I can take advantage of it in the mean time to get to the same goals as if the system worked the way we want it to.
Post Script:
Is it worse to be guilty of a comma splice or to be guilty of a run-on sentence? I not sure if I am guilty of either in the last sentence of my last paragraph, but it looks like it could be either (or both).

I redesigned my site yet again, including replacing all the QT videos with embedded Vimeo players. I'm pretty annoyed though since I went with an iWeb template so everything would like, you know, work for the most part...and the AvN page is screwed up. The text spacing is off so it ends sooner than it should, thus cutting off two pictures. Also the shadows don't show up in FireFox, but I don't know if they ever did. At least the reflections work. I'm tired of screwing with it though, this is why I'm not a web designer. In any case I have a little something new on the AvN page, as well as official information on our wizard duel on the Films page
