That's pretty cool. Sounded very like the Transformers score by Jablonsky. Was that your inspiration?

I was thinking a blend of Elfman's and Zimmer's batman score.

Better a non-working door than a non-dorking whore, particularly if you're working with computers all day.

I just saw Hancock. Meh. It felt like they were making it up as they went along. I liked the music though, and seeing establishing shots and a few scenes that took place in places I was just at today

You forgot The Art and Science of Digital Compositing, Digital Compositing for Film and Video, and Special Effects: The History and Technique. I own and have read the first editions of all of them cover-to-cover and they are now all on their second editions. I would say all of those are extremely essential reading for anyone working or interested in VFX.

Since we're naming helpful books:
National Geographic's Photography Field Guide
I got this from my aunt when I was 14 or so, which she gave me after a rather photo-filled adventure to NYC. Still, a lot of the info in there still holds up. There are some light details on shooting with digital, but I'd imagine they've updated it even more since then.
It's mostly geared towards photographers, but you can apply a lot of it to cinematography with a little bit of tweaking.
It's not special effects, but if you want your effects to have some good shots to find themselves in, check it out.

On a less-than-helpful note, here's another shirt I would love to have, but would be afraid to wear in public for fear of old ladies staring in shock:
Just like my shirt for the Punisher movie.

Well, I didn't actually forget Digital Compositing for film and Video. I had actually intended to include it, but I didn't want my blog post to be really long. I had planned to include it in a seperate posting in the future. However, thank you for pointing these out. I was not aware there was a second edition of Art and Science of Digital Compositing, and I was not familiar with the Special Effects book. On the one hand, I want to say thanks for making me aware of the second edition, while on the other, I curse you for making me have to spend more money.
Also, I'm trying to create a shot similar to the one in the Star Trek trailer. This is an early WIP. Do you guys have suggestions for improvement, or just to add overall coolness?
