So I get off my flight at JFK International Airport yesterday, and I'm walking to the baggage claim, excited to be home. One of the escalators slows to a stop while it is crowded with people, presumably under the weight of everyone and their bags. The group of people begin to look back and forth between each other, confused, now standing on the non-moving stairs. They weight about 20 seconds before moving, and then proceed to walk back down the stairs and get on the other one still working. Yes, even some people from the top/front of the line.
for ya.
EDIT:
Vapor when will you be in the Chi-Town? I have another semester/maybe a year of schoolin' to do there, so we must meet up and party at least once.

It's one of the many HD formats for disc recordings. There's even Red Ray, HD-DVD, and a TON of others. Blue Ray and HD-DVD are the two biggest, and sadly it looks like Blue-Ray is winning.
EDIT: w00t! That's the top of two pages in a row! Anyways, don't feel stupid for asking. I really would like to know more about it. Maybe someone can hit us with the knowledge stick.

Um, actually Blu-Ray did win. HD-DVD is officially done with. Red Ray is an entirely different class, which supports 4K, so it's not just another HD disc competing in a market that has pretty much already settled.

Yeah.
HD-DVD was a technically inferior format put forth by Toshiba in competition to Sony's Blu-Ray. Among other issues was the fact that HD-DVD could only support something like 37GB on a dual-layer disc (to Blu-Ray's 50GB) and the name was clumsy, which matters in marketing. When Warner Brothers announced -- more than six months ago -- that they would be going Blu-Ray exclusive, that was pretty much the death knell for HD-DVD. Toshiba officially ended support and development of the standard several months ago.
Blu-Ray won, HD-DVD is officially and unequivocally dead, and RED Ray is something else entirely.

I bought Tranformers for HD-DVD, and then it was announced that HD-DVD was dead like two weeks later. Oh well.

Wait, so Blu-Ray actually has something to do with "blue laser" versus "red laser" DVD-burnin' machines?
Will this mysterious Red-Ray I never heard of before have anything to do with "red laser" or with the RED camera?
And where does Blue Laser from the Cheat Commandos fit in?
Red McCallum loves blue!

Yes.
AdamBertocci posted: Will this mysterious Red-Ray I never heard of before have anything to do with "red laser" or with the RED camera?
Both. It's being created by the folks at RED Digital Cinema. The idea is twofold:
1) They will create an encoding method by which a film shot in 4K (presumably on the RED but really on any other digital 4K system, or 4K DI from film), up to two hours long, can be compressed and stored on a standard red-laser DVD. Because it will be compatible with standard DVDs, anyone with a DVD burner (aka anyone with a computer less than ten years old) will be able to burn 4K movies right from their computer without having to buy expensive hardware (though no word on the cost of the software).
2) The RED Ray player device will be capable of taking these DVDs and playing the film back. In addition, the player will be able to discern what it's connected to -- 4K projector, 2K projector, 1080p or 720p projector or HDTV, even a standard SDTV -- and downscale the output accordingly. The RED Ray player will run for "under $1000" according to NAB announcements.
Now, while this isn't really intended to replace your DVD or Blu-Ray player (yet), the idea is that as an indy filmmaker you can produce your film in 4K, burn it to a standard DVD, and then take it to any theatre with a digital projection system, plug it in, and screen your film at the full resolution the projector can handle.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg of what this could mean. Remember how digital projection met with so much resistance? Well, that was because it cost between $150,000-200,000 per projector to outfit each theatre. We're talking about a multi-billion dollar exercise here -- one which has only now just gotten underway. But getting a RED Ray player on every screen in America would cost less than half a million dollars. After converting to digital, it would be a simple matter for the theatre chains to add RED Ray to their projection methodologies.
And what does that mean for you, the filmmaker? Well, the widest release of any film in the US is generally about 3,000 screens. Instead of striking expensive film prints -- >$3,000 each, plus very expensive to ship the heavy reels, racking up $10 million or more in distribution costs -- you can burn RED Ray DVDs (<$0.50 each, one or two stamps per), send them out to theatres via regular post, and distribute your film at record-breaking national levels for under $5000.
Always assuming you could negotiate with the theatres, of course; but why wouldn't they be more than happy to screen more films and hence bring more butts into more seats?
RED Ray isn't really a Blu-Ray replacement (again, yet), but it's a distribution game-changer.

I learned something today.
I guess I just assumed that all Blu-Ray meant was that some marketing guys thought it would look cool on the package. "Screw you, other format with your bunch of stupid letters! We're gonna have a sweeping blue thingy!"
Rick McCallum loves you!
