RE: Iron Thread of the Obsidian Socializers: Social Thread v7.0

So, today was my first day of dual employment.
For going on six years, I've worked at a grocery store. All good fun, good co-workers (for the most part), good bosses (for the majority, though one that stuck around for a while was a bit of a $%#* at times... but I won't say too much, after all, I've had more managers at that store than I can count readily), and good customers (again for the vast majority part). But there's no passion in it, right? I talk to people and I move groceries across a scanner. I like talking to people; groceries, not so much. I do seem to be, however, one of those blessed few that enjoys costumer service. So it is with this knowledge that, while pursuing a career in film or television in my area (slim pickin's indeed), I've also been courting Game Nutz, a video game store near me. I was nearly hired at the beginning of summer; now, when it came around time for them to hire again (the guy they hired instead didn't work out; "I told you so" was best left unspoken), it is my turn.
I can't predict the awesomeness of a job on the first day, not down to a ten point system. But so far I'm enjoying it. I'm a gamer, through and through, and combining that with my genuine like for most people, I think I'll do quite well there. Should my hours get high enough there, I'll be quitting the grocery job; as it is, I'm averaging between 35 and 40 hours a week between the two of them, which will certainly help with keeping my car on the road and other expenses, and helps be get closer to realizing my one-year goal of moving out of my parents' basement and into an apartment.
Is working as a store clerk at some place or another going to be my career? We'll see. Society in general looks down on it; "You have a B.S., you can do better." And it certainly doesn't rake in the dough that jobs in a film field might bring in. But if I enjoy it... well, if I can get by financially, I'd rather live with job satisfaction than extra money. What good is more cash if I'm burned out and hate my job?
...Huh, that got more long-term-thinking than I meant it to be. So, yeah - I'm working at a local video game store, and so far it's awesome. Yay!

LOL
There are many, many jobs one can have in the film field, and the sad fact is that not all of them on the 'entry' level pay as well as clerking, hour for hour.

Fair enough. I'm comparing it to another possibility I had this summer, which was Videographer/DP/Editor at a TV station - which is quite likely to have paid better (though it didn't specify, I think). Not that that one panned out anyways.

I saw that. They just didn't know when to quit.

Oh well. They'll just have to make actual Riddick films again. Those were pretty good.
I may rent Babylon, there hasn't been a "good" Vin Diesel film in a while, and the flashy bits look fun. (And by good, well. We're talking about a separate category from most things, but you get what I mean.)
Oh, and heh...

I would've liked to apply to the Gamestop in town, but a former co-worker at my current job had some pretty nasty things to say about working there. Tho, considering the problems w/ my work, I might've been better off.
K-zoo is not a good market for people our age. I'd go on about the problems I'm having right now, but this simply isn't the place.

I should've just worked at that movie theater.

Sorry - I was thinking of Metacafe's producer awards program.
Also, I had meant to say $5 per thousand views. It's reflected in my math, just not in my explanation of the premise. Silly me.

So, I'm auditioning next week for a place on the Norwegian version of "Who wants to be a Millionaire". Should be interesting, and fun.

I tried out twice for the American version. Failed the trivia test both times.
I swear they must set it up that you can't get ABOVE a MAXIMUM score to pass the test, because I've seen plenty of people dumber than me get on that show.

I might agree, I recall Adam moping around my bedroom for days, never leaving the bed, never changing clothes, when he didn't pass the second time.

i never change my clothes anyway, what's your point
Seriously, though, I'd love to somehow try out for the show in a non-NYC location and see how I do.

Actually, this one's my preferred one from that set:
A variant with a brush strokes filter is my current default avatar on LJ.
And yes, the similarity did not escape me.
(Also <3's Freelancer, in the background there, though the store he works at does not deal with PC games aside from WoW.)
