Let me know what you think!

EDIT: By the way, this tutorial is all in After Effects.

I've always remained skeptical about Advanced Lightning.
And it's a shame that we couldn't see it in full flow, because usually Advanced Lightning looks jittery and has that stop-start feel to it, unlike the default Lightning render.
But other than that, it was a good tutorial and I look forward to giving it a go.

Could try this one if you don't care for advanced lightining: PixelMagic's Force Lighting Tutorial.

I've tried that tutorial, as well.
But I stumbled across a few problems.
Namely, my After Effects doesn't have the PS+Ripple filter, and that tutorial just - just didn't work for me.
It's quite difficult to understand what is actually being explained, to a degree.
Just poor content, IMO.
Video tutorials are where it's at.

I'm not sure it's fair to say that it has poor content. Perhaps it doesn't explain every single detail, but then not all tutorials have to be written that way. Some are written for people who are somewhat comfortable/familar with After Effects, but just need a hint or two to get them going in the right direction. The idea that a visual effects tutorial has to explain everything in such detail that someone who's never used After Effects can use it is rather silly. Each tutorial should not always have to explain how to import footage into a composition, for instance.

I also had trouble with Pixel's tutorial when i first tried this effect. But it was kinda confusing and complicated. That's why i decided to come up with my own method. Not everyone has PS ripple. I think the simpler the better as long as it still looks good and sells the effect.

Did Adobe stop including PS Ripple with AE? Or did Pixel perhaps install it separately and then forget that it didn't come with it?

PS-Ripple was only in AE until like version 5.0 or 4.1. The PS stands for Photoshop, if you are so inclined, you can open up your photoshop plug ins folder, copy the ripple effect and then paste it into the standard effects folder in AE. It will work fine.

I guess that works. I wonder why they stopped including it.

Watched it last night, thanks for putting it out there!

My critique:
you should edit your sniffles out of the audio, I think I caught your cold... sick

also, couldn't you have copied the first lightning effect and altered it's parameters rather than starting over from scratch for the second core? If you're doing dozens of cores, that would save time; and the tut would have run shorter.

Being self taught, I'd never figured out what the "guide layer" setting was, so that was worth 20 minutes of my attention right there! doh! Anyway, I'll be adapting your technique for use with saber-damaged droids, among other things. Thanks again!

Why isn't there ever any force thunder with force lightning?

If I try your tutorial I'm going to add thunder.

The noise the lightning makes is the thunder. It's also the sound a spark makes.

Force lightning bolts are significantly smaller than real-world lightning. As such, they are much quieter. Do a youtube search for singing Tesla coils, and you'll get an idea as to how loud force lightning would probably be.

For some reason, your reply makes me laugh.

Reading your post, I felt like I was wathcing the Discovery Science Channel.

I saw the Tesla coils on you tube.

Thanks.

Force-Lightning sounds like a Star Wars tribute band that plays all the songs from Star Wars.

I always have the sniffles.

I guess could have copied the original, but i'd have too change all the keyframes. I dunno it probably would have been a better idea.

I gave this a go last night.
Like I said earlier, I've always remained skeptical about Advanced Lightning and that feeling hasn't changed.
The effect looks scrappy and scripted, as opposed to the normal lightning effect that has that "free" look going on.
The appearance of the lightning looks incredibly smooth, but the movement of the lightning is a little off-putting.
I just wish that someone would post a video tutorial of how to apply the normal Lightning render to footage.
But this is always an alright effect to fall back on.
I appreciate your help, though, drewjmore.
