I just meant that youtube only had one very low data rate for vids wheras Atom films has options to go up to 700kbits

HOWEVER....

I've since realised that youtube DOES have an option for H.264 codec at higher quality which I assume must be relatively new as adobe recently introduced H.264 support in flash player

so apart from it being "official" and the slim chance of receiving a fistfull of dollars if your movie is super popular is there any reason for Fan film makers to bother with atom films?

Those are the main reasons, yes.

Another reason is that Atomfilms and Lucasfilm do a lot of advertising when the contest is on, so you're pretty much guaranteed a lot of views if your film is a finalist. Whereas on youtube or some other site, you don't have to pass any selection process but your film might get lost in the crowd and not find much of an audience.

But the opposite is also true - if a youtube video DOES find an audience, you can end up with more views than you would ever get on Atomfilms. It's a dice roll either way, really.

But now that Atomfilms has dropped the exclusivity requirement, there's no reason not to do both. Chad Vader, for example, is on both sites and getting respectable numbers on both.

That is a shame. Are there any sub-titled films foreign films on AtomFilms site? Just curious if the fact you didn't dub the lines might be an issue.

I remember seeing one French-with-English-subtitles fanfilm for Star Wars in the last year. Also, there are multiple foreign-language films, my favorite being one from the Netherlands here about a really middle-aged lady taking her driver's license road test with a complete sociopath. Either way, the answer is yes.

Also, in answer to the person who asked about using Star Wars soundtrack music in their film, I recall The Death of Jar-Jar having nothing but John William's music.

I contacted Atom Films and they sent me a link to a page i hadn't seen before about the rules regarding using John Williams Score... you can use two 59 second queues of music from the films... and that is all! And you can't repeat the same queue either! This is annoying as my film is going to run at about 8-9 minutes, and i could do with atleast 5 minutes of that having a decent Star Wars score behind it. Shame...

So was that Lucas' rule or atom films?

I'm sure I read that he allowed free usage of all the soundtracks thinking

I doubt you saw that in an official Lucasfilm statement. But there's an unspoken agreement that using clips or music etc. in a fanfilm is tolerated as long as it's not for profit and/or doesn't reflect too negatively on Lucasfilm's intellectual property.

That's just for general fanfilm-making, however. When it comes to the Atomfilms/Lucasfilm Official contest, the restrictions are tighter - because they have to be - and are decided by both Atomfilms and Lucasfilm's legal departments.

The rules also change every year - for example until last year, original SW clips and music were an absolute "no". Now they're conditionally allowed, subject to certain restrictions.

Every year the rules of the contest are listed on the Atomfilms site, so there's no need for speculation - they're right here:

With regards to the music check ut the official guide here. You can use two Star Wars music cues of no more than 59 seconds each long. But we already got our own music anyway.

They've dropped the exclusivity requirement? Didn't know that. Does it say it on the web site?

I'm not sure they ever DID mention that on the posted rules, only in the contract you got if you actually became a finalist.

I think it was just last year that the change occurred. The first paragraph of the contract - where it had always said Atomfilms was granted an exclusive license - suddenly said NON-exclusive license. Of course, there's no telling if they'll switch back to exclusive this year, but I sorta doubt that'll happen.

However, any finalist from an earlier year that signed an exclusive license is still under an exclusive license, until that contract expires. But you could always try to re-negotiate it before then, since they're apparently not so set on exclusivity anymore.

My initial plan was to use the soundtracks, even though an original score would be ideal they always turn out sounding too electronic and "synthy" and its extreemly difficult not to mention expensive to get a proffesional orchestrated score.

Are there any examples of films that have used large portions of the soundtracks? I take it they haven't been sued yet? wink
