RELEASE THREAD: Indiana Jones and the Relic of Gotham
|
Hello, all.
It has been a LONG time in the works but Indiana Jones and the Relic of Gotham is finally finished and can be downloaded from www.rppfilms.com. I'm also uploading it to myspace since it's too big for youtube and I'll post the embed code on its main page soon. For now, you'll have to download the MPEG-4 to view it. It's 30min in length so give yourself enough time! I can't wait for feedback.

Okay, so I think we've worked out the hiccup for the most part, though we still have to re-upload the poster image. Anyway, the movie link should be working now, so enjoy!

I rather enjoyed it! Especially all the little Indiana Jones moments (and how he gets scruffier when the fedora goes on).
The acting was pretty good, with Ryan Schille (Indy) and Brian Finlifter (Joker) standing out. There were also a number of good lines ("I'm just a writer, not a naturalist!" "Then what were you doing out here in the woods anyway?" "I was trying to impress a girl. Girls like...scientists..." "*smirk*").
The video quality could be better. Fitting a 30min movie into 70MB is pretty impressive but the result is kinda fuzzy.
Phi recommended!

Yeah the timing is lucky, but we probably would've preferred it not taking over three years to make the movie . Gotta love no-budget, no-deadlined productions!

I just finished watching it. It's actually really good. The acting was probably some of the best I've seen in a fanfilm, although when indy's in the classroom, he looks nothing like indy, not thats anyone's fault.
Although I did notice a coule of things:
1) It's a 700 year old night, not 300.
2)The bat suit could have been better in the first couple shots, it looks really loose on him. But it got better
3)It was REALLY quiet at the beginning, both in just general ambience, I mean there inthe middle of the jungle and it's damn near dead silence, also the voices were kinda quiet. But it was still watchable.
And I really wouldn't mind knowing how you did that one shot of the lost temple or whatever it was. Was it totally CG or what?
But overall really nice job.

The film was very enjoyable. It was well written and pretty well acted, especially from Indy, which is no easy task. Yeah, okay, he didn't look like Harrison Ford, but you can't expect that in a fanfilm. Particularly liked Indy's lines about everything he had done, and why he'd be okay. That was pretty fun.
The main trio of existing characters were all very well acted, and tying the whole first Batman story into it worked really well within the time period. Nice idea for doing the cross over.
I do however, think that there were a few problems with the actual physical production, and I know a lot of these you'd probably do differently, since I know you worked on it for three years, and that means some footage is very old. What bothered me the most throughout the film, actually, was Indy's costume. Most elements worked alright, but the hat, to me, really looked nothing like his real hat. I know you used one of the 'offical' hats (I could even see the 'Indiana Jones' pin on the side of it in some shots), but it didn't quite look right (I find that the offical ones rarely do). Which was a shame, because the hat is such a major part of the character, for it to not look right makes the character feel less Indy-like.
I also felt you could have used dirtying the costumes a little. It felt very much like a play in certain scenes. Especially the 'opening adventure' for Indy. The guy he rescues is utterly spotless, and I think it would have really helped if he actually looked dirty and beaten, like a prisoner. Same goes for Indy there. Indy's gear is rarely clean, and some dirt and grime on the characters could have really helped sell the situation.
I actually liked Batman's costume, and thought it was fine. Same goes for the Joker's.
I thought at times you struggled to sell the 1930 time period, but to be honest, on a no-budget fanfilm, nobody expects you to be able to do it authentically, so that wasn't much of a problem. You did it pretty well.
You had a plane. That was very cool. The Thomas character was really interesting, and I think the opening adventure could have weaved him in more so that we could have a clearer idea of who he was. He seemed to be some mix between the goverment agents at the start of Raiders, Marcus Brody, Jock and Indy himself. Maybe having Thomas on the adventure with him from the start would have introduced him better as a close friend of Indy's, since he was pretty important in the plot.
The only other thing that really bothered me was Gotham itself, in being a theatre it just came across as the stage was all there was. I think some more location shooting to show a grimy city would have better sold Gotham, but I understand there could have been a lot of practical problems with filming that.
Overall, it was highly enjoyable, and I apologise most of this post has been critical. It always seems to turn out that way, easier to criticise than praise. But well done!

Matte painting. Was actually the temp matte painting, and then I was too busy to spiff it up any more, so we threw it into AE, animated some shake and a bit of a camera move, added some noise (important for matte painting shots, folks) and rendered 'er out.
Glad you liked it, and proud of my boys for making a solid lil' movie.

I liked it very much -- especially the part where Indy puts on the hat and instantly has beard stubble. Nice touch. :-)
Maybe I missed it, but was it ever explained what happened to the girl who was with Kane at the beginning?
