I use em for After Effects. Works fine. Paint tool responds to pressure like it should, ect. Rotoing is also a little easier.

depending on what in particular you are doing they can add incredible dimensions to computer art. wacom tablets (http://www.wacom.com/index2.cfm) are the professional industry standard for basically all things tablet. check out the cintiq line - expensive but amazing.
for 3d modeling these wacoms are alot of times more useful than a mouse, and are employed by most major 3d firms - especially if you ever start modeling in something like zbrush, where using a tablet is very intuitive. by the way, if you are into 3d check out zbrush (www.pixologic.com) its an amazing tool that can let you achieve ridiculous levels of organic detail. ILM used it extensively in the pirates of the caribbean movies to create the 3d characters.

Mostly everyone uses ZBrush because you can draw on 3d objects just like using a brush in photoshop.
If you're going for a tablet, buy a wacom. Even the cheapest models are way better than any other, since their DPI and such is way more detailed than the others.

They are the best ever. Application has nothing to say, wacom kicks royal behind I recommend the Bamboo product line for beginners (price, you see), Graphire and intuous for the bit more interested and dedicated, and Cintiq for the hardcore people. I've used a Wacom Cintiq 21UX (21" monitor with a built-in tablet and pen.) 'twas frigging awesome!
I had a "TRUST" branded tablet for a while, but threw it away, since it, quite honestly, sucked.

Cintiq is for people who have way too much money and should be giving it to me The Intuos3 is the most amazing piece of hardware I've ever purchased. Going on 2 1/2 years and it still operates like new, and the actual drawing surface is totally scratch resistant, so it always looks nice and pristine. If you've ever used a Cintiq, you'll note that it's a little different from a traditional tablet, as you can actually detect the slight lag in the movement of the curser since you're watching it follow the tip of the pen. Supposedly this occurs on the other tablets as well, but no one can ever tell because you're looking at the screen and not your hand; I've never noticed anything outside the Cintiq myself, nor has anyone else I know
But yeah, I can't say enough good things about Wacom. Their products are awesome, and they speed up my workflow in everything. Every person on the roto team in the Pixel Corps has one, and if they don't when they join, they buy one in no time. When you start doing roto work or hell, any of this stuff full-time, you'll thank yourself for buying a tablet every step of the way. At my current "day job," they won't let me bring my tablet in to get things done faster or help with the "office ergonomics" they're so obsessed with, and my index finger hates them for it. It amazes me that a design and print ad department doesn't already have tablets for everyone.

It all depends on the user. In After Effects, it's not gonna make a difference in how fast you get things done and it surely won't make you a better compositor. If anything, it's just more comfortable to use a tablet for compositing. Though, I know some great compositors that hate using the Wacom. I personally like to switch between the tablet and a mouse.
If you're doing something like paint though, the tablet is awesome.

Like Ryan? I personally find I am much faster at everything, just seems like I can get the curser around the screen in a quicker and more intuitive manner. I can't actually use Shake with a mouse, I'm horribly slow if I do, but give me a tablet and I can "grow" a Shake tree like a freakin' time-lapse

I want the one the guy who does CTRL+ALT+DEL has. He posted a video of it for some Christmas thing I believe. It's basically a touch-screen monitor in Wacom form, but oh so shiny.
Photoshop never looked more fun.
