Does it really matter what color you use to carry the video signal in composite cable? For example, if i wanted to go right from the composite video output on a pro camera, can i use the white or red lines instead of yellow to plug it into a tv? Is there some magic that goes on here? The reason i ask is because i have several length of composite cable that are white/red only, but they are pretty long. All the stuff i have with video is a lot shorter. I don't really want to buy a new cable when i already have a bunch. Thanks!

That's fine. The color coding is just so you don't get confused, any of them can send the signal equally well.

Yep, you can use the red (or white) cable to carry the video signal instead of the yellow one if you need too.

(EDIT: Dorkman beat me too it.)

There's no difference between the red/white/yellow connectors, however, there IS a significant difference between short and long cables.

Long cables will result in loss of high-frequency information and additional noise pickup due to their higher inductance and capacitance. This is also a problem for "digital" cables as well.

While we are on the subject, I have a question. I have a dvd player that has standard video out and progressive video out(5 cables, Red,Blue,Green,Left Audio Channel, Right Audio Channel). I also have a few composite cables that have the plug on each end. However, when I plugged the cable in, it didnt work. I got a greyscale video signal. Yes, I was careful to match, so for example, if I plugged the white cable into the green socket on the dvd player, I did the exact same on the tv. Hover, it didnt work. I didnt think you woud need a specific cable for progressive. Any advice?

Nope. Composite video cables are no different than component video cables. You must be missing something in the settings on your TV or the DVD player.
