Canon HV30 Info

Hey guys,
I've been doing some serious thinking about what camcorder to buy, and wanted your alls imput on this. I've done some research and I know the HV30 is probably one of the best for the money. Records in 24p Cinema mode, 30p mode, etc. Has an external output mic connection, and shoots in HD. And I know alot of people here on the forums use it as well. But I've read where some people have been having problems with it quitting six months into using it, it suddenly fails to power-up. I know along time ago, I had a Canon (like High-8) and it did the same to me one day, refused to turn on.
So, is this something that other people have seen, or just a random show of faulty parts for that specific camera? I'd appreciate the feedback, trying to check up before I spend $780 on something that 'might' quit working on me.
Thanks

Don't waste money on the HV30. Get the HV20. It's just as capable (does everything you'll want it to), doesn't have features you don't need, and it costs less.
I've been operating my HV20 for around a year-and-a-half; never had a problem with it.

I had my HV20 for a little over a year before I sold it and bought the HV30. I frequent the HV20/HV30 forum over at HV20.com and I think I recall this happening to one person over there, but there are literally hundreds of members on that forum. There are occasional problems posted, but they are usually minor and no widespread failures as you described. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who wasn't happy with their purchase of either the HV20 or the HV30.
If you are concerned at all, buy a warranty with it. I bought a 4 year warranty on the HV30 for $99. I am usually against the purchase of warranties, but in this case I feel that it is worth it for the peace of mind. Hopefully I'll never use it.
BTW: Cinemode rocks...I use it for everything now.
Edit: I agree with bgii_2000, while the HV30 is a bit better, the HV20 will probably do everything that you need for a little less money. I had special circumstances which made it worth it to me to sell the HV20 and buy the HV30.

Alright, thanks. Any suggestions where they'd sell it cheaper? Alot of the places I've seen don't sell the HV20 much cheaper than the HV30, only like a $40 difference, which is odd.

Actually you're right. Looks like my price info is out of date. When the HV30 was released it was going for $999, and the HV20s started going of sale at places like bestbuy.com and b&h for only $699. Looks like they've equalized in price (reflecting the fact that they're basically the same exact camera with a firmware upgrade).
So, disregard my last, go for the 30.

Found the HV30 for under $500 here. I don't know what makes it that cheap, but thought it'd be worth a look.

I've never heard of 86th St. photo, but this price has to be down near or below wholesale, so I'd be real careful about before buying from here. I usually check resellerratings.com on stuff like this, and notice that their rating is .08 out of 10.
http://www.resellerratings.com/store/86th_Street_Photo_Video
There have been a few people over at HV20.com who have ordered from stores advertising prices $200-$300 lower than everyone else, but what always happens is that the merchant takes the info and says that they will be "sending it right out". Then you get an email saying that they need you to call them to "verify the credit information" before they can ship. When you call, they try to sell you over priced accessories using extremely hard sell techniques. When you don't give in, you get an email a week or so later saying that your camera is backordered. In the end, you never get the camera. Sometimes you can stop the order and get your money back, other times you have to go through your credit card company to stop the sale.
It may be tempting to try to save the $300, but go with someone reputable. I've seen it as low as $699 from reputable dealers, but you have to be patient and wait for sales. B & H is always good. I bought mine from Butterfly photo, and it was at my door literally 2 days (free shipping) after I ordered it from the other side of the U.S. I paid $800.

I have the HV20 and have a "do it yourself DOF adapter" and the results are great. I would very much recommend going with the HV-30 for the 30p mode. Shooting in 30p will give you much easier footage to work with, and no average person can tell the difference between 24p and 30p. It still has that slight strobe to it because of the progressive frames. It also makes it much easier to green screen that footage (don't know if you need that, but it's something I do a lot.) In terms of problems, from reading HV20.com there seems to be almost no issues with them dying that I've heard of. I think you'll be very pleased with your purchase.
As for places to purchase, just go with good old B & H as they often have the best prices or very competetive prices. Whatever you do, do not buy from anyone without researching and know that as was stated above it will basically be a bait and switch any time a company is offering it for more than $50-$100 under B & H. BH and Circuit City have it for 799.99 right now.

On second thought, look here
http://hv20.com/showthread.php?t=9232
There are some slightly better prices and all those places listed in the first post are reputable.

I have had my HV20 for about 8 months, and my HV30 for about 2 months, with no problems. This is the best camera you can in this price range.

I've had my Hv20 for about a year now, and am always surprised by the quality of my footage.
I also have a custom D.o.f. 35mm lens adapter, and love it.

For anyone interested in buying an HV20 or HV30, here is a good thread. This guy checks some of the major reputable dealers for the best price each day and posts them here:

Along the lines of this thread, i am buying a HV30, and adobe production suite cs3. anybody have a good idea of what kind of compys i should be considering? i will be using this in an environment wherein turnaround time needs to be kept to a minimum. $4000 or less would be good.

Just a word of advice. Be very careful of online stores when you see a price that's way below the norm. They're usually bate and switch scams. Once you order they'll try to get you to by a ton of accessories that you don't need or want for the camera When you say no, they tell you that the camera is out of stock or in some cases they'll just cancel your order without notifying you. And needless to say, you don't shady people like this to have your credit card info

Before I got my HV30 I briefly looked at all those online retailers that offer deals too good to be true, and I found out a lot of them are just a whole bunch of dummy fronts, all for one company which does a lot of bait-and-switch.
Do yourself a HUGE favor and stick with B&H. They are the best online to buy from, and if you keep as eye on the price every day, it always seems to go on sale every 2-3 weeks.
I was budgeting around $1000 for an HV30, and got mine from B&H for $760, low enough that I was able to also pick up a shotgun mic.
