I did this all by hand in photoshop, following a tut by Ryan Weiber. I call it star wars kid because that is my nickname at school. Here is the link, please comment!

Not bad, dude. I like whatever flare effect is happening there, it needs work, but I'm not sure if it was intentional in the first place. If so, nice work. If not, hey, it looks cool.

Try filming with a slower shutter speed, so you get the blades to fan out more when you spin them, one of the things this is lacking that is present in the lightsaber effect is the long, spun out triangle shaped blades you get in a fast spin, something you lose if the camera is opening and closing the shutter too quickly.

Thanks. Believe it or not, I shot that with an HD camera, and it was brand new so I don't really know alot about it. I appreciate the advice. happy

I also like that odd flare. I'd be interested to know if and why you chose to do that.
If you really want to impress me, roto the reflection in the pond as well...

Pretty good kid. Now don't get cocky. /couldn't help myself.

I see there was an attempt at the reflection in the water. Or was that an accident?

Lol. No I didn't do the water yet. When I finished this it was 3:00 in the morning and I was tired as $%#%. I might add about 30 more frames to it and do the water later. Also, the flashes were unintentional and were made by the metal pole I was holding reflecting in the sun.Thx for the C&C.

You said, you followed a Tutorial by Ryan Wieber. So how did you actually do it? with Photoshop or what? 'cause I'm working on a Lightsaber movie as well, I'd be glad to know your methods wink

nice work, by the way grin

I like the water reflections, but for the most part, this video is nothing really special, I'm surprised at all the comments, the image doesn't look like HD... I am also curious, why is it in slow motion with no motion blur to the blade? The video looks all wrong to me, as well, the lens flare distortion may look cool in this shot, but it's a very bad thing to have unless your working with a anamorphic lens. It's not bad, just add some blur to that saber, and post-crank your fps correctly for more smoothness. I look forward to seeing more stuff from ya.

elemental_fantasy: Youtube messes up the quality alot by compressing the video so much. It's in slow motion because that part of the video only took four seconds, and I figured it'd be too fast really to watch on youtube. I appreciate the C&C.

The reflections work for me there in the revised clip, you may have over-done the 'ripple,' since the pond is essentially still, but it fools the eye. Did you paint it frame by frame or did you just swap red for white pixels there?

Now you need to do the 'fanning,' if you watch any of the real movies frame by frame, the blades always sweep-out a large area when moving. This is actually saber-roto 101 stuff, be sure to check out the other tutorial links in the "Everything" sticky.

No, I did it frame by frame to make sure that everything looks right. And I didn't do anything ripple-wise, I just painted over the pole reflection in the water. The ripple was natural. Also, yes I know about fanning, but after two sleepless nights, I don't feel like re-doing every frame just yet. Thanks for the C&C.

But only if there's actually motion blur from the blade prop that needs to be covered up. There didn't look like there was much motion blur at all in his footage, so overcompensating would look much less realistic, IMO.

err, yeah, I already knew this one, thx.. So you did it all in Photoshop? The whole Photoshop thing is no problem for me, but how you got to be able to edit the clip with photoshop would be nice to know. wink Did you extract the frames as picture files from the clip? So with every frame you needed to open, edit and save it? and then the next one? This is an incredible amount of work!

Yep, except photoshop only allows you to have 25 image files open at one time, so I did it 25 at a time.
I can't wait to do it again! I need a roto job before I go insane! cry haha
