Yeah it's one of the things I hate about working with film. Plus the softness you tend to get compared to RED plates, which I'm working on right now.

Great stuff, Mike. You threw me for a loop when the movie started and her outfit was red. My brain did a back flip for a second there.
Here's some photos I took, mostly with my iPhone, but one from my SLR:

NateCaauwe posted: You were working in the right color space, right?
BrandonFlyte posted: Without a lookup table, they'll appear washed out/milky. Some compositing programs (unfortunately not AE) have LUTs built in so you can see them a little closer to what they'll look like after the color grade.
Yeah, the LUT doesn't count, though.

The only problem I really had was the actor choice of shots. I thought they were to close and if this was really going for a Kung Fu homage there would be more long shots.
Other than that it was brilliant, the ending was very entertaining. What language was she speaking?
0:40 is a beautiful shot. The last over-shoulder to black is pretty too.

While the technical stuff way out of the league of my plebeian brain, it was a well executed piece.
Since you couldn't degrade the video you coulda messed up the music audio some more for that bootleg feel

Thanks to that, I am completely intimidated and scared to even release mine now. Everyone's got such fancy equipment stuff now and I'm living in the past with my 16:9 XL2. Literally puts what I have to shame.
But I know it's more about the story than the camera, right? Sucks to want the best of all worlds. You just can't... well I can't.

PraetorDrew posted: What program did you use to color grade? Red Alert? RedCine? Color? Final Cut? All of the above?
I missed this one.
The process for post was that I cut the film using the 1k ( "_M" ) proxies directly in Final Cut, then once the short was all cut together I sent it out to RedCine via Crimson. During shooting I had accidently bumped the "auto white balance" button (I don't know why that even exists, but it does) a couple of times, so the white balance in a few shots would vary.
So I re-set the white balance to 5600 across the board, and also re-set the ISO of certain shots to bring back some detail in the highlights. I then exported each shot as a 1080p ProRes file, and conformed them back in FCP. From FCP I rendered them out in one big file to AE, where I did the actual color grading, proceeding to blow out many of the highlights I had taken the time to restore in RC.

You used AE to color correct RED footage that could have been color corrected epicly in a RED program?

RED doesn't make "epic" color correction programs. RedCine and Red Alert are good for basic tweaks and one-lights at best. For high-end stuff like, say, secondary corrections or color keys, you need to use a third-party app. I can't afford a Scratch or Da Vinci, and Color makes me feel insane, so I used AE.

Which worked pretty darned well. What tools did you use? Did you use hue/saturation for secondaries?

I think this was pretty good.
The only thing that bugged me a couple times was a feeling of slowing down after the fight picked up some momentum.
It may have been the actors or camera placement relative to the actors; I'm not quite sure.
Also, why did you go for the washed out look?
You had all this color data and kinda tossed it away. (And I've never seen a Kung-Fu film with this look)
But, it's just a test.
Other than those two points, I liked it.

That was pretty good. I enjoyed it a lot. The blue to red dress was also pretty well done. Also I have a question about color correcting on the red. I read somewhere else that the RED works like a DSLR in that it allows you to control each color individually like processing a photo from a DSLR in RAW format. If you imported into AE would you loose that control or do you export it in a different format that maintains the RAW format?
