Do people even use 3K? 2K, yes, 4K, yes, but never seen anyone use 3K...

Once it's cheaper than HD, you're going to start seeing a hell of a lot of 3K.

I expect people shooting on Scarlet will use it as their master and intermediate format, before downsampling to 1080p or 2K.

I'd suggest Beafet, that you check out AVID FREE DV - see what that has to offer. I've briefly glanced at it and it seems to be a cut down version of AVID's software (though you need some specific things hardware wise on a PC I think) that'll handle DV.

Yeah, I've looked at it too. I think it is very limited in the number of tracks you can have.

Anyway, the project I am helping with is call Lumiera. It started out as Cinelerra v3, and then the developers decided to redo it from the ground up.

Cinelerra 2 screenshot.

It is resolution and frame rate-independent, and so will Lumiera be as well. Things like codecs will be handled by plugins.

Well, I would love for it to be open source and distributed among Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. A few things I would like (I like all the ideas already said, no use repeating them)

-Capture via firewire or USB
-Some sort of mixer that could record or just preview live from a video camera and do basic on the spot chroma keying to test lighting and such
-Connect the camera and use the program as a preview monitor for the camera
-Node System(but that could be pushing into not being a NLE anymore)
-Having the NLE guess what the filesize would be of a rendered video with settings you provide, and showing a few preview screenshots to check quality and such BEFORE rendering
-Alpha support
-Filmstrip Support
-OGG support dancing
-Customizeable UI similiar to Blender (I know, I know, but once you get used to it, it is a really great UI, ive been using blender for over a year now)

Cinelerra... Well, it's too unstable to be used. I hope Lumiera will be better! Actually I've been waiting for this, there is a good free OS, "word", browser and the list continues. Except professional editing software!

I'm pretty sure that FCP can do all these things, and I know AVID and Premiere can do some.

You know, Premiere can do PNG sequences like it ain't no thang, and FCP can't. Stupid FCP.

You know, I thought I hated you...now i'm sure of it!!

Yes, images sequences are something I would like to see supported in FCP and, to some extent, they are. two ways to do it:

i) set default still image length to 1 frame, import, drag all to timeline
ii) click the "special" button in motion, add image sequence, save and import to FCP.

workarounds? yes. as good as having it as a feature? No.

anyway,

I prefer to do my FCP "image sequences", not that I do them very often, by importing the folder that contains the images and dragging said folder from browser to timeline.

It feels wrong that I don't really have any input on this subject.

When I think of freeware, I generally think of the user being a beginner. Therefore, when I see all these fancy codes, plug-ins, and general pro-type stuff being suggested for a free program, not only does it seem unlikely, it feels like a lot of it would be ignored anyway.
Your basic NLE needs to be able to recognize basic formats, and keep the basic editing simple, and probably contain some sort of text, graphic and transitional options. Maybe some way of explaining resolutions and pixel ratios, and which work better for what.
Beyond that, I dunno.

Tho, I'll tell you right now I'll take iMovie over Windows Media Player any day of the week. And twice on Nate's birthday.
At least, this would be true for the last time I actually used either of them. Which was years ago.

VT - a different spin and probably an accurate one. I mean it's all well and good suggesting these things above (especially the higher end stuff) but then you have to ask, if it's free - who's going to develop for it. for example, I doubt very much that anyone would build a board for SDI/HD-SDI I/O for a free NLE, let alone one that'll do something like Dual-Link for 4:4:4.

A point well made VT.

anyway,

You must not use much freeware - although the correct term is probably Open Source. These days "free" doesn't mean "compromised piece of crap." Just have a look into Blender, x264, Ubuntu, etc. There is some amazing stuff out there.

I'm messing with Cinelerra 2.1CV and my first request would be to standardize the interface. GTK+ or Qt so it blends with the user's desktop instead of low contrast grays with accents of saturated red, blue, and green (eww). The slanty buttons don't help either. The sad thing is that I suspect someone was very proud of designing the theme from the ground up.

I suspect it was designed to be used with a window manager that does auto window tiling (like dwm or awesome) since four separate windows open by default and fill the screen. It's an awkward setup if you're multitasking other windows.

Then again, I can only assume that they hear such comments a lot. Maybe that's part of why they're doing a rewrite. I don't really have anything to add about current or proposed editing capabilities. I'll poke those later.

Blender has editing capabilities, by the way. I've edited all my films so far with it.
