Question on Macs and video editing
|
Hey, so I'm going to be going to film school in the fall, and Im wondering if I should get a Mac or a new PC. I know on one hand Macs are the industry standard and most people I've talked to use them, but on the other hand I've used a Mac to edit and it was too frustrating for my taste. I also prefer how versatile PCs are with most files and the ability to have one tailor made to you with all the different manufacturers.
So I have two questions. Which should I get and what makes Macs the general preference?

Get a Mac.
You should get a Mac because you will be using Macs in your classes and labs anyway. I would not be surprised if your school or program will recommend a Mac.
You should get a Mac because Final Cut Pro is the finest editing software on the market, particularly for the film student, and a PC version seems unlikely at best.
I am an editor by trade. I would not steer you wrong.

Find out what your school uses - that'll be a pretty big influence.
Though Final Cut does seem to be the industry standard these days, so take that into account for sure.

Hmm. Then it looks like Im gonna have to say goodbye to PCs, expecially if a PC version of Final Cut looks unlikely. Dont they make Macs that give you the option to install Windows alongside Mac OS?

By using Bootcamp or Parallels or similar software, you can install Windows on your Mac, yes.

If for some reason you can't afford it or you just really like your PC... you don't NEED to switch.
Macs are great. And there are some post houses that use nothing but FCP, but honestly, whether you learn Avid Xpress, Premiere Pro or Vegas, you're still learning the same editing principles. And it's not terribly difficult to switch between NLE's if you're using FCP at school (which you likely will be). I learned how to edit on Premiere and after 4 years switched easily to FCP in college. I never owned a Mac until just three months ago (because now I can afford it), and that was 8 years after I learned how to edit.
So not getting a Mac isn't the end of the world.

This is coming from a PC user.
Get a MAC!
The software integration alone is worth everything in the world when it comes to making videos. I'm probably going to get a mac further down the road just to do on-site editing during large projects.

i purchased a macbook pro in december, it has completely changed my life in terms of video editing, mainly cos of the portability i dont have to be stuck in my spare room editing for hours i can now spend time with the missus and edit. the functionality of the mac just feels alot better, ok they do crash but in my experience windows machines crash like its an olympic sport
if my pc ever died i would probably replace that with a "big" mac (with cheese)

Yes Macs do crash, but it's VERY rare. Out of the two and a half years I've owned the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, FCP only crashed once on the Mac Pro and it wasn't even a big deal type crash either. Autosave is King, but honestly you don't really have to worry about it.
Yes almost all NLE's have the same principles, which is why it was easy for me to switch to FCP when I was so use to working with Premiere in PCs.
Tip: PC + Huge Film projects = (in my cases) a crap load of crashes. I've experienced it, I know I'm not the only one either. Project(s) I did took longer than usual to complete because of the crashes either making me reboot or just restart the program from the last time I saved it. It was a royal pain no doubt.
However if I was to start learning the in and outs of editing now, I would want to learn on a system that doesn't worry me with constant crashes. Making me think I did something wrong when all it was that was causing the crash was that it was STILL "conforming" the imported footage.
Bottom line: GET A MAC.

RE: Question on Macs and video editing

I love the monthly "Mac versus PC" threads
I am just amazed that this one hasnt gotten into a flame war...yet
Here is the deal, and this is coming from a mac user since the age of 4(who has also been using a PC for the last 8 months,so I have seen it from both sides) Macs, are the the cream of the crop when it comes to video editing(or anything else, but lets stick to the subject ) they run the programs smoother, and they run more industry standard programs(i;e Shake, FCP, Motion, etc, programs that are making vast onroads on Adobe's former hard lock on the market). Macs also run Vista in some cases faster then PC's do.
So theres my 0.02 cents =)

NOOOEEE YOU KILLED THE WOOKIEES!
ut you do NOT have to say goodbye to your PC. You can edit fine on your PC! Each different NLE is pretty similar to one another in a certain point of view. It's no problem switching between final cut and premiere/vegas/etc. Just because you don't have a Mac doesn't mean you can't make anything good. That sentence is so confusing.. But if it's compatibility you're looking for, and less crashing you're looking for , then I'd get a Mac. You can still dual boot windows onto it and just use that as your primary OS is you're going to miss it too much, then switch over to the Mac OS just for your video editing...
That's what I'd do.

*sigh* The illusion that Mac is a better OS comes from the fact that Apple provides you with the hardware to go with the software. What they give you is loads better then what your average cheapscate run of the mill PC user will buy for his machine. Also, they know what what they're giving you, so they can streamline it more, and don't have to code for the above mentioned pieces of crap. When people say it runs smoother or faster, thats mostly a hardware thing (the rest has to do with that streamlineing I just talked about). When they say it crashes less, this has to do with less unpredictable third party software and drivers for it to need to deal with. When they say its immune to viruses, this untrue, however, very few people write viruses for Macs, so you are less likely to get one. So Mac isn't necessarily a better OS, it just has less it needs to deal with.

Thanks a ton everybody! I've looked into it and Ive decided to get a Macbook Pro along with Bootcamp to run Windows, that way I still have access to all my Windows programs and files. Hopefully I wont have to reboot everytime I need a certain file both OSs can read. It also costs about the same and comes with about the same stuff as the Dell I was looking at. So it looks like Im getting the best of both platforms here.
