All right so I have AVI's on my drive that I want ot play using quicktime, but it insists that I need to install a 3rd party software to do that and it sends me to its site where it wants me to download the XVID codec. When I click on the icon it gives me two options which I have no clue what to do with them once I get them. They are XVid Componet Binary and XviD component source. any help please?

What OS are you using? I have had similar problems with Vista, but I use VLC player now, and don't have any problems.

You can download it there. Someone else may have more insight.....

avi's are not Quicktime compatible. The only ones that I have gotten Quicktime to open were uncompressed avi's. The only time that I open them in Quicktime is when I want to use it to convert them to .h264 .mov files. For viewing .avi files, you should use a different program.

Xvid and DivX are not open-standard codecs, in order to use them you need to agree to their license agreements. Quicktime can open a wide variety of avi formats. avi is a 'container,' as is mov, for encoded video data...the specific encoding used in a given file has infinite variety.

Thats a fair (and true) answer. What I meant was that there are compatibility issues. When QuickTime opens an .AVI file, it examines (so to speak) the codecs which were used to encode the audio and video tracks inside it to see if it is compatible with them. Unfortunately, there are many of the better codecs commonly used within .avi files that Quicktime cannot yet use.

Totally true: for some reason there are many otherwise common codec that Quicktime refuses to support. WMV and DivX, for instance...both have support in various 'free' viewers, but QT just doesn't seem to 'want' to be the ultra-swiss-army-knife of video tools....so you're stuck with MediaPlayer or (your favorite viewer here).

My comment was directed more toward dispelling the notion that AVI is a 'thing' in itself, the way MPG or GIF is. Sometime I think my purpose in life is to educate-- presumptuous on my part and a constant source of social issues for me... nerd
