Just wondering...
Does anyone know what the first Star Wars fanfilm was? Also...what was the most recent? I just want to see the big changes of the quality and the effects of each of them. (I know...pretty stupid, but I have nothing to do right now.)
Thanks!

Much of this depends on your definition of "fan film".
Although it is probably not the first time some enterprising folks with a camera threw together SOME sort of cinematic homage to Star Wars, what is widely considered "the first SW fan film" is a spoof called "Hardware Wars", just because it made a big splash at the time and is something that has survived until today.
Star Wars fan films _as we know them today_, that you can go see on the Internet and such, can be traced back to "Troops" by Kevin Rubio. It served as the sort of kickoff point for this whole wacky community.

It's really difficult to say what the "most recent" fanfilm is, since you get results less than a week old if you type "star wars fan film" into the search bar on youtube (and many of those are going to have production values much lower than Troops). There's a whole glut from atomfilms that are in the annual fanfilm competition, so you might be able to find something there, and the most recent fanfilm hosted by TF.N is The Emperor's New Clones which was released almost two years ago.

really?!? The Emperor's New Clones? Two years? wow! I guess everybody got bored of making movies. On the other hand, I've seen threads about new and upcoming fanfilms though.

I can't imagine there were any SW fan films before Hardware Wars.

Like they've said - Hardware Wars would probably be the first, and Troops is considered the grandaddy of the internet fan film "boom". There was, however, another one in between called Quest of the Jedi. It was (is) about 2 hours long, and I believe it was made in Australia. The acting, etc. isn't too good, but it's worth checking out for historical value. It was made before the prequels came out. You can download it here:
http://fanfilms.phispace.net/Quest%20of%20the%20Jedi.mov
BUT, it's a big mama at 629 MB!!
If you're looking for recent, you can find newest stuff here in release threads, search YouTube (most recent), and check out Atom.

No, TF.N just doesn't upload fanfilms anymore unless they're really something to behold, I guess.

1983, my 3rd grade principle got a print of hardware wars and presented it for the whole school as an assembly. I wonder when it was actually made?
<edit> the mighty wiki says 1977. Woah. Of course, you tube has it.

Knoxville's downtown public library has a copy of Hardware Wars in their video library. I remember in my homeschooled days my mother taking us to pick out an educational video for fun. She, like all of us, was under the impression that only educational films were there. Found a copy with funny pictures on it, and the rest is history. I think I was about 13. Sheesh that's well over a decade ago!

I did one short on VHS in 1988 and placed a Darth Vader helmet inside of a empty video arcade game (a life size game). The Vader mask was breathing, and you could hear video games. It's kind of weird and it doesn't make any sense. It's better left in the graveyard of ... look what happened before it was called "fan films".

ha! I think I remember seeing hardware wars. I actually thought it was pretty funny watching the flying toaster as the millenium falcon and the tin man as 3PO. I saw that when I was about 7. Wow thats a long time!
