Well I'm creating a bunch of muzzle flashes for a machine gun, and need an expression to randomly turn the opacity value to either 100 or 0, nothing in between...
I tried a simple wiggle expression with a super-high value, but that didn't really do the trick.
Another problem is that the muzzle flash lasts more then 1 frame most of the time, so this expression would need to include something to correct that as well..
Any ideas?

Just to throw it out there, I have a lot of plates from Combustion 4 of muzzle flashes if you want the library on wmv. I'll send it over to aurellia tomorrow if you want them.

Did adobe fix the lack of WMV support yet? Not that I see the need for it, just asking.

I thought it always supported wmv's... I remember back when I started trying to do vfx, I was using Windows S*** Maker and exporting to wmv, then roto-ing lightsabers with it in AE.

Why does the wiggler not work? Make it 30 times at second at a max amplitude of 100 in the layers opacity.

how i made my muzzle flashes was to make a pre-comp then get a couple frames of machine gun fire then a blank frame then another two and so on, i would then change the scale slightly so it looks like a slightly different flash. i did this for about 10 seconds and exported it as a video i then paste over my footage

Well when trying that, two things would happen.
1) The Muzzle flash would always stay "on" for more then 1 frame
2) Sometimes it was transparent. The values shifted like 10% or so from the start/end points.
I tried making the max amplitude up to something rediculously high to fix that, but no luck...

I guess doing it manually will get me the results I'm after...

Yeah, when I did all the muzzles for The Forest II it was manual opacities with copied-and-pasted keyframes. I haven't gotten round to learning expressions properly, yet (I've still to go through some of Rhys's video tutorials properly) but unless you have a huge amount of muzzle flashes to add, manual keyframes should suffice.

i do recall an expression where you would set 3 keyframes i.e. opacity to 0-100-0 then add an expression to repeat. think i saw it on a hologram tutorial to get that flicker effect

i make my flashes from existing ones just make a pre-comp and then setup a pattern to get a flicker. render out and then i have a pre-made muzzle video i just screen over the footage, the rest is just animating it to the gun

Create a seperate comp, make one black solid the comp size and one white the comp size. To the top layer(doesnt matter which one is on top) apply a strobe light effect, then go to the effect setting that says "operates on color only" or something like that and change it to "Makes layer Transparent" You need to tweak the strobe duration and period, but now you have yourself a perfect track matte. Nest this comp in your video comp, place it above the image of the muzzle flash layer, then change the muzzle flash layer to use the "Luma Matte (Comp name)". You'll see this option in the time line to the right of the transfer mode tab. Everytime the comp has a white screen, the muzzle flash will be visible, and everytime its black, the muzzle flash will disappear. PM me if you need more info
