After Effects Memory Question

When I start up AE i get this screen
http://www.flickr.com/photos/28717702@N05/2682829920/
Specifically I'm concerned about the "3% used of 2045M" part. Is there a way to change the memory after effects uses to better accommodate hd footage, and if so how, what settings do you recommend etc.

I think it's just telling you how much disk space
After Effects is taking up on your hard drive.
I don't think it will effect how much video footage you can import
into After Effects or what you do with the footage after you import it.

yeah, but i originally installed AE when I had only 1/2 a gig of ram. then it said 12% or something like that. I then installed 2 gigs of ram (or 2048 mb) and now it says 3% of 2045, which leads me to believe its not talking about my hard drive.
i only ask because AE is taking forever to render my new hd footage, which is uncompressed and so its larger than it needs to be, but...

That number on startup represents the percentage of RAM being used by other programs when AE loads.
So when you added four times the RAM, the number went down to 1/4 its former size.
AE is telling you that it sees 97% of the RAM is available. This is a good thing.
Look for the indicator that says how much RAM is being used when you're actually rendering, there should be a constant tally on the screen as the render progresses.

2 GIGS of ram = 2054 MB of RAM (approx.). AE is using 3% currently when it starts up, not a bad this. When you had less RAM AE needed to use a bigger % of it to run, now it needs a smaller percent, but probably the same amount. Try going under your memory and performance controls inside of AE's menus, disk caches may help your AE run faster if you have a lot of extra HD space you can use as virtual ram.
If you have more than 2 GB of RAM, AE on Windows XP (which it looks like you're using) can only naturally use 2 GB of RAM even if you have more installed. You can open your boot.ini settings and change it to add a "/3GB" so that you can get a virtual extra gig out of the performance like so:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="????" /3GB
*where "????" is your operating system. Information can be found on the Microsoft website or by typing "AE 3 gig switch XP" or something along those lines into Google.

There must be some way out of here. Said the Joker to the Thief. There's too much confusion here. I can't get no relief.

Not to heap more technical concerns on you, but in looking at your screengrab I noticed something else that you may need to be concerned about as well:

good point, even 6.5 is TONS better.
CS3 is a bit slow, but it's a hell of a lot more optimized than 7 ever was.

The /3GB flag is great, but I find it breaks several other 3D apps I run.

from the rvd website
"The film’s effects were accomplished via Adobe AfterEffects, version 5.5 at the time"
also, why is 6.5 so much better? (i have the standard versions, so no motion tracking)

As far as I can remember, 6.5 had much more features and was a whole lot more optimized for XP than 6.0 was. It was also the best version until CS3 came along

You don't need a very advanced piece of software to make a mask and then blur it out...

I lol'd.
I can vouch for anything newer than 6.0 as well, though if that's what you have then use it!

I do have 6.5 as well, but some annoying errors have kept me from using it too often. I think I'll try reinstalling and see what happens. Obviously 6.5 is still pretty old but with my limited cashflow is was what I could afford. thanks everyone for the help.

Not everyone in here makes only lightsabers.
..
Wait, who am I kidding, that's exactly what everyone in here does. In fact, we should just rename this to "The Lightsaber Boards"
