So what's Fireworks then? They really can't combine a few of these into like two programs?

Fireworks is normally for web design, bridging the gap between design and implementation, so you might go Photoshop -> Fireworks -> Dreamweaver.

I haven't used it ever since the elimination of the <table> style of HTML design, as that's what it was good for. Back in the day though, i used to do graphic design in Fireworks, as opposed to Photoshop.

Seems like Twitter is the big thing these days. I still haven't joined, because I know I wouldn't tweet much. However, I also need to make industry contacts, and it seems like they're all there. Conflicted I am.

Not that I Twitter, but I think it's more a place you go to keep up with your existing contacts, not make new ones.

Also a place to type "@celebrityname" six or seven times a day to give your friends the impression that any of these people actually know who you are or care about you.

Or wait 6 months and then people will stop using Twitter and start using something else. Or wait 12 months and they'll stop using something new and switch to something even newer.

Also I hate the phrase "tweet".

I'd wager it'll last longer than that. There's a lot of big names on Twitter, and like it or not, it's a very convenient way of keeping track of what a relatively large amount of people are doing. Without having to wade through hundreds of applications and "WHAT HARRY POTTER SPELL ARE YOU?!?" quizzes.

As far as the term "tweet" goes, I've gotten used to it but I did find it a little annoying at first. It did make me giggle when Dorkman refused to join a group called a "twibe", but then continued to use terms like "tweeps". Lulz.

Even if you don't actually send out any messages, it's still worth having a Twitter account just to follow those industry people (Stu Maschwitz, Mike Seymour & Mark Christiansen are a few names that come to mind) & keep track of what they're doing. I note that those types tend to post mostly about the subject you followed them for in the first place, so it's all good.

Every time someone says "tweet", only one thing comes to mind:

"I tawt I twote a tweet on twitter"? Get away from me.
I didn't even know the "twibes" thing. It's worse than the "i[Object]" trend.

Weirdly, I find the reverse (converse? inverse? I dunno) true. There's this really loud bird outside my bedroom window, and when it tweets I think of Twitter. sad

Okay, first of all, tweet is not a phrase, it's a word/term.

Second of all, it's already lasted longer than that. Twitter launched in 2006. I didn't start using it until last April, to follow what was going on at NAB (even though I was there) and I honestly expected that would be the extent of it. But I use it regularly to keep abreast of news and topics that interest me, all based on the accounts I follow. Twitter has consistently become more popular and had more prominent personalities join and update regularly. Like it or not, it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

And I've made a number of new contacts via Twitter, just for the record.

There's a line of how many things I'm willing to append "tw" to. Twibe crossed it.

"Tweeps" is useful as a contraction considering the 140 character limit (shorter than "twitter peeps" or "followers" or whatever you might say). "Twibe" is just stupid, doesn't save any space, and by the way, those DID quickly go out of fashion when people realized there was no apparent use for them (see also: wefollow).

When talking to Vanity Fair about Facebook (the Phil Markoff thing) last week, I mentioned it and Twitter (as well as YouTube), and said that I agreed with... some dude... that said that this social media is really coming into its own. Twitter isn't going away. New people will come on, tweet about their poop, and then either slow down how much they tweet or just forget about it. Meanwhile, people who use it well are the ones that are giving us minute-by-minute updates on the stuff going on in Iran. Peer reporting, from social tomfoolery to actual political statements, define these social applications. I don't see that changing anytime soon. At the end of the day (no pun intended), the 5 o'clock news is a good recap of the day, but then, so is reading an RSS feed. And on the other side, you can wake up and read a newspaper about what happened yesterday, or you can check the Twitter and YouTube channels and see it unfolding in real time.

New Media. Took it a few years to grow up and find an identity for itself, but here it is.
