Hehe.... Thanks for posting a link to my short Guybrush... "A Movie Apart" was my entry... but Im sure by now that it is not going to be a finalist this year (I didnt had the chance with an unfinished film)..

My biggest regret it that I didnt get the tickets for the SDCC....shame...

Really liked "A movie apart", all you have to do is finish the ending and I would imagine it is a shoe in for next year. You don't want to put that in this year anyway, get the ending finished. It's really good.

Here are some other films that entered into the competition...

Lord vader's trial

Ez-Chewie
http://www.atom.com/funny_videos/3EFBFFFF01B1C143001700BC5539/

Also how did Jedi Gym from last year not win an award? This was awesome!
http://www.atom.com/funny_videos/sw_jedi_gym/

And if you look into this production and see the different sites he has played this on. (Youtube vs. Atom) You can see that since the Atom site change a year ago, people don't watch the Star Wars fan films as much on this site. Wonder why?

Jedi Gym on youtube has over 600,000 views, on ATOM it only has 10,000.

Back in the day...or just a few years ago, Atom Star Wars challenge was pulling those type of numbers on a good film like this. The audience hasn't left as the 600,000 views on youtube has shown but the audience has left Atom.

It really happened overnight, right after the site change. The numbers of views for the star wars challenge droped off the map. I mean Ryan vs. Dorkman only pulled in 13,000 views? They put the film into the competition just three years prior and it is way over 300,000.

I guess youtube has just taken over. The audience in there, Atom just needs to find a way to get them back.

I figured I would throw my link on here too. Mine's a long one though, running 24 minutes, so it's a nice watch on your lunch break lol.

Atom's audience problem is easy to figure out.

They stopped being a decent site for classy films in an emerging medium (AtomFilms) and rebranded themselves as just another Intarweb comedy site (Atom). Look at their front page, it's indistinguishable from any of ten "here's some funny stuff" sites.

At any rate:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320378465947

It should be like the Oscars, you shouldn't be allowed to sell them. You should have to give them back to Lucasfilm for a dollar. tongue

hahaha...Selling their SWC Trophy!? Mmmhh… recession is hitting harder than I thought…!!

You are right about “Jedi Gym”, Guybrush… even though that film was a bit bizarre for my taste, it was worthy of some recognition at the awards… but well…

Maybe it is time for Lucasfilms to rethink the strategy for this event… more exposure would certainly improve the overall quality of the competition and benefit the filmmakers…

That guy who sold the award should have started it out at $5000.00 and then droped it down to find the value for it.

I was looking at the hits Ryan vs. Dorkman have on youtube and it is 4 million. The same video that is playing on Atom (which is the host of the awards and has had RVD2 up for one whole year) is sitting on 13,000 views?

Something is wrong.

I don't blame Lucasfilm on this one, they don't control the way the content is handled. They just gave Atom the rights to distribute the films, but they do need to find a better partner to team up with then Atom after the contract runs out. That is if they continue the competition. There has to be a better partner to market these films. It is still popular, youtube views prove that along with the attendance at the awards show at comic con.

Star Wars is a huge franchise and Atom is dropping the ball when they can't bring in viewers. That is Atoms only job, it is what they are supposed to do. The difference between viewers on Youtube vs. Atom for the same movies is huge.

Again...
RVD2 4 million views vs. 13,000
Jedi Gym 600,000 views vs. 10,754

A few years ago, Atom and Youtube were on the same page when it came to views for the Star Wars fan film finalist and in some cases doing an even better job of getting the film out to an audience.Pink 5 and the other award winners in the 2004 competition come to mind.
If you had a great star wars fan film, you were almost guaranteed 100,000 views or more...sometimes way more! It was a great reason to be in this competition.

Now, odds of you breaking 15,000 views with a great film is very very slim.

It's not that star wars has played out....rvd2 getting 4 million views on youtube proves that, Atom needs to get it's act in gear before it loses a huge franchise. If I were Lucasfilm, I would be looking for a new partner.

As an opinion somewhat from the outside looking in, the deal with Atom is prestige, IMO. Anyone can get views on YouTube, but not everyone there will have their film seen by Lucas, etc. The only thing about Atom is that the winner there isn't necessarily the best film that was released during that year. There are some great films that just don't get included. But that's just part of it. I do think it's great that Lucas shows an interest in what his fans do.

Yeah last year after been selled to MTV and Co., (according to wikipedia - I didn´t know that a couple of months ago..) the site "target" completely change, and I suppose the SW fan challenge is their "good old days" franchise. For example the new Atom is not kid-frienldy... and lets face it, there are a lot of kids that want to see anything Star wars related, now even more with the TV series... it´s hard to search and find videos for your nephews, little cousins or sons, when you have titles like "Hot Sluts" on the homepage... (i´m not a moralist or something like that, but the site change its 180°)

No doubts about the audience being bigger on youtube, there was where I find initially the RyanvsDorkman films... but definitely nothing beats the "official" nature of the challenge, the Comic-con, your short being featured on the official Star Wars page.. thats unique. Anyway one thing don´t cancel the other... you can publish your videos on youtube and no legal problems.

By the way yesterday was the deadline for the paperwork/legal side of the accepted films.. today they send me confirmation and apparently everything is set and ready, voting starting July 1.

On a extra note I saw some of the accepted videos on the Atom site (the official channel is not ready yet).. and pretty good works, for all tastes, but I don´t know if I made a list here I´m spoiling the official announcement or the very own author publicity campaign!

Cool that you saw some of the accepted videos. How many made it this year? 15...40? Thought 40 last year was a little too much.

That's very true - when Atom became an online branch of Comedy Central, they dumped all their non-comedy videos except the few that were part of the SW Challenge. So Revelations and the few other serious SW finalists are the only non-comedic videos on their whole site now (and they've only allowed "serious" entries for what, two years?).

So the Fan Movie Challenge isn't really in tune with Atom's mission statement any more. But there's still the prestige (and promotional opportunity) of being the "official" contest, and most of the entries are comedic, so apparently they've chosen to keep it going.

Hmm I have no idea about the total number, but I don´t think it could be as much as 40! (btw didn´t know that was the case last year O_o) I just check a couple of animated films (--Flash and the other one in 3d) and like 5-6 live-action ones... as my only way to give the Atom guys a master file of the short film was in digital form, I had to use their FTP server, so in the destination folder where I upload my file I could catch the names of others entries, and later search it on the Atom site. But obviously there should be a lot more, delivered by mail on tape or hard disks.

And like FX_guy says, yeah, mostly comedies/parodies, but overall they have quality and good taste, not so outrageous like some of the others channels on the site. wink

Good job with that one, and a good Vader voice too, which always goes a long way. And it's a small detail, but thank YOU for using the EXIT sign in the background to your advantage! applause

Hey everyone. I found this thread while looking for other people who entered this years competition. I made EZ-CHEWIE (thanks for posting it above). Looks like we didn't get in this year, as deadlines are popping up and you guys are filling out forms (congrats to you).

I uploaded in the last days after the Enter the Star Wars challenge button had disappeared from the site. I also mailed a copy in. Guess i can hope to get a call next year.

I'm starting to think that are Howard the Duck gag may have been a contributing factor. We used original art, but it may have been to close for comfort for the atom/lucasfilm team.

if anyone wants to give a look or wager an opinion you can give EZ-CHEWIE a look at http://www.atom.com/funny_videos/3EFBFFFF01B1C143001700BC5539/

Thanks ,man happy

It took a lot of playing around to try and get a voice that was somewhat like Vader's. We have begun shooting part 2 and I think I've gotten it even better.

The exit sign was actually one of those things that I hadn't originally planned on, so it was a last minute change but I am glad I did it.

Hi Cameron! Yeah man, I dunno about the judges this year. I thought your short was great, along with several others that didn't make it in apparently, which really makes you wonder what's going on over there at Atom? And while I am happy for Guybrush that he got in finally with his film, I can't deny that it bugs me a little that he didn't even submit it this year and he got in. Not bashing, because he clearly worked hard on it and deserves to be in, but I just find it odd that with so many submissions happening each year, they (Atom) will disregard current submissions for ones from years past. But at the same time I can understand that they can only select so many, so maybe there are a few that they wanted in, but will have to wait until next year to select as finalists.
