My friend recorded footage from his camera onto a MiniDV casette. He gave me the casette but my camera plays it back oddly (see pic above). There are weird bars across the entire image as it plays. Is there any way to fix this?

Did you know that the derivative of the inverse hyperbolic tangent of the sine of x is equal to the secant of x?

Try cleaning out your camera. I remember encountering this a couple of times, but I don't remember how I fixed it.

EDIT: If the problem persists, and the tape works fine with his camera, could you just borrow his camera?

And if his camera does it, then his is the one with the dirty recording heads, not much you could do to save it.

You could buy cleaning tape...

It really helps because I've had this problem a number of times already. Also playing it through a few minutes could get the problem away. Though it means that the heads are dirty...

Watt sticks and some pure alcohol also helps sometimes if you can get to the heads. But cleaning tape is the way to go.

If it doesn't do the job completely here's what I did to make sure it worked (only do it when other methods do not help, this helps mostly with Sony Camera's, don't know about other brands):

- Take the Battery out.
- Take the little flat round battery out (used for saving settings)
- Power on you cam (so all power go's out...)
- Put the battery/power back in except the round battery.
- Power on
- You settings are reset now but for some reason it mostly helps because camera firmware is not always bug free either... This resetted all data to factory settings but also reset's any bugs that might have occurred within the camera's settings
- Power off, put round battery back in, power on.
- Clean the heads with cleaning tape. Done!

aaaaaacutally, just put in a tape and let it play all the way to the end instead of buying a cleaning tape. It does the same thing. And it's cheaper. It's all 1's and 0's anyway so when you record over that same tape again, it's replaced by new data without the annoying bars of random video. That is if your issue is a dirty head and not anything else.

And then again... If that doesn't fix it... do my reset thingie (with or without the head cleaning tape)

It saved me many times before...

Clean the camera with a cleaner disk.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got a head cleaner but it doesn't seem to work. It makes weird noises when I insert it in the camera and then I get this error message E03 that says the unit is in safeguard mode.

I haven't had the chance to try other solutions here (been busy with other things) but I will give them a shot and let you know.

Well I got the cleaner tape to work, still no go, and also played his tape all the way through to the end with no luck. I think it's something to do with his camera, since mine records and plays my tapes fine.

There's no little battery that I can see so I wasn't able to try that solution.
