There's some rad work in there, and some - pardon me for saying - really boring work in there.

It's confusing, is why I bring it up at all. Suddenly my mind is in "Why does he think this simple shot belongs on a reel next to that awesome shot? Did he maybe not do what was impressive about the awesome shot after all? What DID he do on that shot? What did he do for any of these shots?" mode, and I'm no longer paying attention to the reel at all...and with no breakdowns, I remain confused throughout.

To alleviate that, I'd suggest having title cards to explain your contribution to each shot - or say up front that it's all you - and also trim some of the motion graphics shots, to start. There's definitely a damned impressive reel in here somewhere, this is just showing us a liiiiiittle too much.

Cool work, though.

Well this comes down to it being my company reel, it has to show some of the boring stuff as well. When i show my iron man re-make to a club owner or a telecoms company they don't get the idea.

As for the rest just say what you want a wireframe of. Bar a few models the whole thing is mine, models, textures, logos, planets, effects, composting, lighting, rendering and even sound (bar the sound sample from iron man).

The lack of breakdowns is because clients don't need to see this, and my reel would become then even longer..

I know it's still a little long (even though a company reels are longer than personal reels), what would you suggest i remove?

I can appreciate that, but I don't mean to say boring as in "that shot doesn't excite me," I mean boring in that the work isn't impressive for what it is. (On a reel with some very impressive examples of much-more-difficult FX work.) This applies mostly to the motion graphics shots. Some work for me, but many don't. (The eyeball, Framebusters, Sundae, and BeatBox shots are all rather cheap looking.)

If you want to go after clients looking for motion graphics work, it might be a good idea to do some shots just for your reel that look more corporate. (Think cell phone commercials, Monday Night Football bumpers, those little vignettes Coca-Cola puts out, etc..)

The Star Trek shot towards the end also doesn't work for me.

Fair enough.

Anyway. There's cool work, and I don't mean to bust on your chops.

Star Trek, Iron Man and the James Bond/Heineken thing don't work for me. All I can see is how far your versions are from the real thing.

The rest is fine.

BTW = what's with the quicktime encode? It's pretty pixelated and blocky...

I'd love the Iron Man, Galactica stuff etc... and just leave up your original work. I think it's misleading to put stuff like this on a showreel as people may think you actually worked on those shows. Nice reel otherwise though !

Bustin chops is good. I'm not here for praise.

The cheap looking adverts are cheap as they only had limited budget, time equaling money and all that. That said though i will speed those clips up and look to remove the simplest.. The eyeball i can replace with the one i did for the company that they wouldn't pay for, a much more technical version, with skin morphs a dilating pupil etc..

Maybe i should mock up some expensive looking motion graphic shots. Or give one of my clients a snazzy present..

I understand the Star Trek, Iron Man and shots might not work for you, being lesser versions of their film counterparts but it's to show what i can do. Not what Hollywood can do with a team of guys.

As for James Bond/Heineken clips they were paid for and are original.

The quality of the quicktime will be fixed this week.

I used to do a lot of homage based stuff in my spare time, if i didn't show any of that my reel would be missing a lot of the technical things i can do. I'm not trying to mislead anyone, what you see on my reel is what i can do, on my own, unassisted..

I will be updating my reel very soon, i might go for some more energetic music as well.

I'm also entertaining the idea of doing a shot breakdown on one of my clips, but then which one?

Con. Crits are always welcome..

You could just show wireframes. That tends to be enough to show you actually did it. Of course, render passes are nice, but not really that needed.

The new version is nearly ready. I've added a couple of wireframes instead of shot breakdowns as i don't want to make it any longer.

That reel reminded me of my PSone days. Most of those stuff reminded me of the cutscenes from PSone and opening menus.
