Hello, welcome to the thread on 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media'. I am, %20, the entity responsible, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' (tBSWM) is a portrayal of the Star Wars phenomenon at the time of the release of 'Revenge of the Sith'. Consider the project a video archeology / media analysis documentary. Imagine being able to search through all the media from that time and have it recompiled/edited to pull out different themes and memes of the coverage. The titles of the chapters (http://www.noneinc.com/tBSWM/tBSWM_FAQ.html#DVDChapter ) will give you a sense of what each one is about. If one sounds interesting there are options to play that chapter from the FAQ.

For instance if you're a PT fan there's a chapter on Hayden. If you're an OT fan, then the 'Opening Intro's New Hope Impact' might be for you. With 48 chapters there should be something for every SW fan and there's even room for segments which non-SW fans might appreciate, since often when people discuss Star Wars they often drift into other societal issues.

Viewing Warning : It's not recommended to watch this all at once, if ever. If a chapter sounds interesting try it out. Then go from there.

If you would like to watch the whole thing, but time is an issue, the FAQ has a schedule which lays out the possibility of watching one chapter a week for the next year, so that when the 5th anniversary of RotS comes next year, you'll be well informed.
http://www.noneinc.com/tBSWM/tBSWM_FAQ.html#ChapWeek

This week's chapter, 'Hype', explores how corporations, news outfits, individuals, and other media creators wound themselves up as the anticipation of the final Star Wars movie approached. Keep in mind all media presented was created/shown between the two months before to two months after RotS.

So that's the general approach of each chapter, you're viewing repurposed media from that time, cut-up and recompiled to investigate how society perceived/reacted to the Star Wars phenomenon. From hard news reports to the pseudo-news infotainment coverage, to the creations of fans who are attempting to expand the scope of fandom and culture, to the random hit-and-run types who have latched onto the massive cultural event for a quick comment. Some of this material maybe vaguely or outright familiar or possibly new, what I hope is that the editing allows the viewer a new viewpoint or additional insight into this time period.

Since this is a strange can of worms, don't worry about the level of questioning, just ask.

Alright, so it's been bothering me since this thread first appeared, and I HAVE to ask, what is, "Backslacpkping?" I thought you'd just misspelled "backslapping" in the thread title, but you keep spelling it that way. What's it mean? Is it a joke of some sort or something?

Everyone if you have any kind of question on this project, just ask it even if it seems odd. tBSWM has several layers which diverge into a wide range of subject matter, so it's difficult to explain in a simple sentence or two. Conversation might help.

Jedi Cow wrote: "what is, "Backslacpkping?" I thought you'd just misspelled "backslapping" in the thread title, but you keep spelling it that way. What's it mean? Is it a joke of some sort or something?"

The FAQ was set up to answer such questions, since the title was created on purpose to reflect some of the inner nature of this project.
http://www.noneinc.com/tBSWM/tBSWM_FAQ.html#Backslacpkping
"Because this project was partly a response to teh backstroke of the west, I wanted a back*something* word in the title. This piece began in a shorter form focusing on the mistakes/gaffs by the talking heads. so backslapping seemed appropriate, since the final piece was going to be drawing attention to their reporting errors, they slacked on the facts. The word combination got the final approval when the translator into chinese returned 8 characters."

For those who like to read reviews, the review by FanEditOrg member Blueyoda does a great job attemtping to explain what's churning under the surface of Thee Backslacpkping With Media. (scroll down in the pdf)

"Thee Backslacpkping With Media" might be a joke in your eyes, but the fact that there is a full DVD which can be downloaded or watched online may refute your view point for someone else. This is a different type of project then what tends to get played around these parts, i've done my best to explain things in the FAQ, ...maybe i've over explained. But watching a short part usually helps makes people understand what's going on so...

So if anyone's still reading, this weeks chapter which can be watched online or downloaded to any electronic device which can play video, is the 'Hayden Christensen Intro'. It is a short chapter (1 min. 16 seconds) which cut together the clips which were used to introduce Hayden in this time frame.

Chapter of the Week - "Politics Mis-Reporting"

"Politics Mis-Reporting" is one of the more important chapters in 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media'. This was the chapter which started it all. Watching the coverage and being periodically introduced to blantantly wrong but reported to be right facts, by not only the mass media but also in individual opinions was the virtual spoon which stirred up this pot. If a system could be developed to reproduce similarly constructed pieces, it would be an invaluable tool in the area of fact checking of any type of media. For the newly streamed media could be cross referenced with the massive pool of archived media to determine if the new speaker is factual or just wrongly opinioned.

This would help promote a more active democracy which would lead to a greater sense of liberty. Two of the proponents of the Prequel Trilogy, which as shown in this segment, were actively promoted by George Lucas, but were commonly used to back up a pre-agenda of a political link against the current regime. Media fact checking could be a way to undercut political rhetoric before it swells.

Why when people discuss Star Wars do they often compare the phenomenon to drugs and alcohol? This weeks chapter investigates this phenomenon as it took shape in the time up to the run of Revenge of the Sith. Even Rick McCallum got involved.

OK. It's taken me a while to wade through all the (intentional) n00bese, but I think I finally have a handle on what this is supposed to be. It seems like I should have about a billion questions at this point, but the only ones that keep popping up is:

Where are you getting all of this? How many people are involved in this? And lastly, why are a group of pirates making mashup 'documediamentries' about star wars?

Thanks for asking some questions I didn't realize should be answered in the FAQ.

Where are you getting all of this?
When you say all this i'm guessing all the media. About just under half, I recorded myself. I had two old vcr's which i'd let run for 6 hours before leaving for work, then another 6 hours before going to bed. Also had a miniDV camera which I could run for programs I new were going to have some Star Wars reference in them. The rest of the material was collected from places online. For instance, fans of Hayden all over the world collected his interviews, this became a great place to find media. Also at this time free online repositories were becoming fashionable to use, so many pieces were collected by searching through their archives. But what was great about the addition of online media archives is that random people who became active citizen journalists put their view point up for everyone to see. This overall presentation makes it possible to cross compare the news media verse the citizen journalist media. For a full list of media used visit this part of the FAQ:
http://www.noneinc.com/tBSWM/tBSWM_FAQ.html#WhatMaterial

There's also a list of media which didn't make it into the presentation, so if you know of a broadcast from this time which is not listed, let me know. For instance the great documentary "Galaxy's End : Revenge of the Myth" I couldn't convince the creator to let me have a copy, but in that documentary it's got some view points on the Star Wars phenomenon not found anywhere else. Definitely check it out, please write his to release it on DVD.

How many people are involved in this?
As mentioned above, many people recorded their view point of the journey upto Revenge of the Sith. But this presentation was put together by %20. It collected all the media and searched through, cut up and recompiled this presentation to show case how hopefully in the near future an online system could do this same process but on any topic of the user's interest.

And lastly, why are a group of pirates making mashup 'documediamentries' about star wars?
You can call %20 a pirate. But %20 belongs to a collective of individuals who preserve Star Wars media. Millions of television programs air once and are never seen again. (local news for instance) Preservationist attempt to make available media which is typically lost. It's my opinion but what you see at the FAQ (or if you download the DVD and watch on your tv) is a possible future of media interaction. A User Defined viewing experience. There are video mixtapes and documentaries on topics which pull together multiple video sources to inform the viewer of a larger issue. This is one of the goals of this project. To hopefully make people realize that society is wasting billions of online media resources to the view as intended experience. But if a system could be created which could give new life and provide insight/research into topic people ask questions about all the time, doesn't it make sense to do it.

Why Star Wars. well besides my continual fascination which started out with the movies themselves, but now it's more into why people give Star Wars their time. George Lucas evolved the movie making process through ILM and all the special effects research done in the late 70s early 80s, by shifting it into the digital realm. He's been involved in education ever since. But being in the corporate world where the idea you mentioned that anyone who reuses media is a pirate is mantra number one, and corporations have coerced governments to enforce this idea. Remember several people went to jail for several years because of Revenge of the Sith. So it takes individuals with another opinions to create something which could hopefully show to the world that maybe we should rethink that idea. You might come to the same conclusion, but I believe that all these online videos should have an active component which allows you to search them to get to the bits which might be relevant to you. I've done this for the Star Wars topic in this narrow time frame. If it's interesting to you or you appreciate the idea, tell others how great it might be to do this for other topics. Maybe then the actual system will be made to accomplish this task.

I didn't intend to create this when I started. Was just recording whatever Star Wars bits I could find, it's a hobby. But as the material collected grew, random statements would start to link up to statements made by someone else often in another part of the world. So yes there were lots of basic link ups like people talking about Chewbacca or Stormtroopers. But other areas defined themselves in the coverage. So someone might make a flippant joke that C-3po is gay (a long lasting meme) in a commentary piece on some news show, but then online there was a video which could be considered gay bashing on youtube, but it was Star Wars themed. So it seemed appropriate to link those sources to show how the general public was reacting to not only Star Wars but other larger cultural issues. Was also great to hear from people waiting in lines (and those not in line) all over the world, why they were there and what aspects encouraged them to spend their time with the Star Wars phenomenon.

But in the mean time, I'm hopeing that people will appreciate 40+ hours of Star Wars related media condensced into 3.5 hours of info packed video mixtape edutainment. So if anyone wants, the main feature can be viewed online or downloaded, or download the full DVD (burn your own) and gain additional insight from the audio commentary and bonus features. If you watch two chapters a week, you'll be all prepared for the 5th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith.
