Threw this together while taking a break from a music video. Concept for this was some sort of holographic itunes visualizer. Trying to improve on my match moving and compositing. Any critiques are most appreciated.

Watch it here.

The little guy is rotating too much (too fast) but the particles are solid. Successful test, good fun.

Thanks Ryan.

I couldn't really do much about the rate of spin. That footage is of the actual singer, and is synched to the music. Probably doesn't matter much anyway as it's pretty hard to make out his facial expressions anyway.

Thanks again!

The move looks pretty flawless to me, nice on that.

The lighting on the table isn't quite right: it should spread more when the pulse rises, not just increase in brightness. There might also be a muffled reflection in the table, it looks a bit glossy. Maybe shoot a sample with a candle or flickering lamp over the same spot, and use that for reference on the 'right' light-play and reflections.

I like the idea, I just think the face is slightly boring. It'd be cooler if you actually took one of the iTunes visualizers and used it instead. Atleast something very similar.
Very nicely done though, I'll give you that.

Wow... nice job on the matchmove... It looks right...

The lighting indeed needs a bit of work.

BTW: I do think the light brightness changes are not bad... I do think that the light should spread more as it becomes brighter.

I wasn't directly meaning waveforms here. iTunes has some pretty slick 3d-esque vizualisers.

Another cool way of going about this would be to have the hologram appear like a huge water-like thing, where it would fill the entire table with gentle waves to begin with, and once the music starts, it would be a full on 3d waveform, with cool stuff like the head in there as well.

That would have to use trapcode //wave//form though.

That's true, actually. A reflection in the table, sharper when closer to it, more diffused when farther, would go a long way.

Pretty nice!
I'm going to plug something of my own here to show the extent of what Ryan was saying about the fading of the sharpness in the blur.
My CGI
Lots of errors with it since it was only a quick and dirty matchmoving test, so don't bash it too much.

CC Vector Blur or a Compound Blur with a gradient as the blur map would work perfectly!

Whilst we're on this topic, does anybody know how to incorporate a motion vector pass from a 3D package into after effects? I normally just jump over to Nuke for that, but it would be handy to know how to do it in AE?

You can do it with one of the RE:Vision plug-ins, if you have that.

Well I don't know which plugin it was but I came across one (probably a included plugin) that could blur based on a vector map.... dunno which one it was and didn't play with that function... but maybe that would be one... \

this might also be helpfull.... http://aloedesign.com/2008/12/maya-2d-motion-vectors-tutorial/

Thanks for the tips guys! I'm probably not going to change anything on this clip, but I'm going to apply what you've told me to my next test. I'll post the results here.
