Here is my result after playing around for 30 minutes (keep in mind I have never done video editing before, and also this is on a 30 second digital camera recording...investing in a DV camera right away!)
My First, uncleansed attempt at video editing...

That's not bad, but you can see the ends of the stick spinning beyod the end of the lightsaber blade. Also, try applying a Median filter to the mask so you get more rounded edges.
Good first attempt; practice makes perfect.

Is there anyway you could host another lightsaber effect shot contest, to where anyone can create an effect shot? I think we should host another one.
Anyone here from Washington State or where abouts, that would be interested in creating a film?

I don't think there would be much point to another lightsaber rotoscoping contest. It has been done before. Besides, any lightsabers made properly with After Effects would surely win.

Saber light is back up.
I was going to do a comparison between SL and AE, but SL was so slow that I didn't finish the render. It just looked bad, really.

This is a great thread, I just have one question, and I suspect it's a matter of personal preference.
How do you find easiest to make the animation of a lightsaber turning on and off? I suspect that the old Star Trek trick of nothing but the effect moving on screen would be easiest, but some people have some really awesome scenes of sabers extending and retracting while the wielder is moving freely. I can get the idea of how to animate a lightsaber with a stick as a reference point, but...
Actually, I think I can sum my entire question up in seven words: Is it as hard as it looks?
Anyone?

There are two answers: Yes with an if, and no with a but.
Yes, if you have a background plate or can make one in Photoshop. Alternatively, no, but you have to have a lot of practice in guessing where the blade is and how it will react to blur and such.

Aha, I think I get what you're saying.
So in any shot where the saber is turned on/off, also take a snapshot with the actors out of shot, then when editing the frames, make this image the back layer and paint little blobs of transparency over the bits of the saber that don't exist yet.
Works for me. Now to get hold of that camera...

yeah you pretty much have to mask the blade for turning on and off if you do attempt any other way it wont come out as great.
