There have been a few things that resemble a lightsaber but nothing that comes really close. If you search the net you can find a few things, but as I am feeling quite lazy right now I don't have any links for you

The biggest problem is getting the laser beam to stop at a certain point or to 'double back' on itself more or less without cutting through the handel. Otherwise you would be swinging a saber of infinate length and then there is the problem of making a power source small enough to fit in a pommel the size of one you see in the movie yet powerfull enough to project the laser for extended periods of time and still be able to cut through anything.

yea it is possible to make a lights saber . but the only this is that we dont have "the force" that is the only way to stop the lightsaber beam thingy from going ne farther. its possible but we are like lazy.....well some of us not all

At this stage I think MR's and Parks sabers are as close as we are going to get for a while...and Im not so sure a bunch of Star Wars crazed fans running about with working Sabers is such a good idea.....

As has been said before getting a laser to suddenly stop is incredibly hard (and to my knowledge, impossible.)
The only other thing close is if you use a flame. Very much like a standard gas blowtorch.. it'd need adapting obviously but you can see the idea.

I believe science will be able to create a lightsaber in no more then a couple decades - if no one will be interested in carrying the research out only for this purpose, and the technology will be created for some other purpose (or accidentally).
But if now someone had enough money to support specialistic research for building a lightsaber, it would take, say, a couple years.
Yeah, I believe in science ((:

I think it would help to loosen the requirements a little bit.
* You don't need a small power source, as long as you could use a power cord. What has been portrayed as the earliest lightsabers in the Star Wars universe had large, bulky power sources worn in the Jedi's belt.
* Does it really have to be a massless blade? How about letting the "blade" emit from all around a pole.
You could make a pole that is covered in small nozzles, each working as a small blow torch. All these flames would blend together, making up a gas fire that obscures the pole.
Next, create a system for containing the gas. (maybe charging it and using magnetic and/or electric fields). Next step would be to excite the gas into a plasma instead of just burning it - I think powerful lasers could be useful here.
Next, harness the excess energy emitted from the plasma to power the repellation/containment fields, making it stronger with increased energy.
Now you would have a oblong cutting device that would cut easily through practically anything, but still be able to repell other devices of the same kind.
After you have got this far, you could consider ways to remove the pole and make the power source smaller.
