I have nothing against ExCel as a venue - it's just that Earls Court would have been so convenient - train to Richmond and then tube. For ExCel it looks like it's train to Waterloo, then Tube out to ExCel.
Is there actually a tube station at ExCel or do you have to take the DLR to get there?

ExCel is probably better for me as it's just a train and DLR ride away, so it swings and roundabouts which is to be expected given the size of London.

The nearest tube is Canning Town, which is on the Jubilee line.

From that tube station you can walk (but it may take a wee while) or get the DLR to Custom House. Custom House is also served by National/over-head trains. In fact there is a train that runs from Richmond direct to Custom House but may take a while.

Silverlink does look like it would take awhile. Well, plenty of time to plan for it.

Does this mean the banner needs to be re-designed too? wink

SFX conventions shock Well, if they were as good as the magazine then that must have been a real blast, lol.

Excel is an awesome venue. I've been to about 3 cons there. Nice and big, and nice and close to me.

I'm glad they changed the venue if it's that much better at the ExCel than Earls Court,

but I'm REALLY irked that I already had my hotel reservation and now I have to go through the whole process again!

It is not easy to make reservations when you're 9 time zones away!

Ah bummer, I have no idea where excell is.
It was daunting enough a prospect going to earls court, lol!
Can I get a train to excel from padington? Or do I have to get a bus or something?
Is anyone else from Wales going?

    I'm scared daddy! =p

From Paddington it looks like you'd take the Circle Line on the Tube to Tower Hill, then get the Jubilee Line from Tower Gateway to Canning Town. From there it's the DLR as detailed in Lord-Tice's post above.

You don't get on the Jubilee line. You get off at Tower Hill/Tower Gateway and walk a short distance to the DLR. It's about 1 city block away, caddy corner from the Tower of London. Once you're at the DLR Tower Hill/Gateway platform, catch the train headed for Beckton. That will take you to the Custom House stop for ExCel. Be mindful of which train you're on. There's one that goes to Lewisham, which will take you south, so avoid that one. If you find yourself on it, get off at Westferry and switch to the Beckton bound train. Also, keep in mind that the tube stops running at 12:30 a.m. and the DLR stops running around 1 a.m.

That sounds easier. I've never taken the DLR so I didn't realize it was that close. I was going by my London Tube map.

Mind what zones you plan to travel in. If you're coming from Paddington station, you'll need a pass for zones 1-3, which is £5 pounds, good all day, and works on busses and DLR also.

Cheers for all the info, it's a big help. I'm gonna get it down on paper and take it with me just incase I get stuck. It's a shame that the event isn't more central.
Where do I find out about the hotel packages that coincide with the con? Are there any special offers or anything?

You have to buy your tickets first, then you'll be given a password/code for hotel discounts, but basically you will have to do all the work yourself by phoning the local hotels and given them the password/code and they'll be able to offer you a discount. Not exactly easy nor convenient and I'm not even sure how good the discounts will be but hope that helps happy
