hello, i am doing field research on performing fandom within my dissertation (kent state university, ohio). i am looking for participants in an autophotography (aka self-directed photography) during the Celebration III event. specifically, i'm interested in costuming (public expression of fandom)for sports, fashion, and fiction.
my approach to fandom views fan performance as individual expression of identity as opposed to traditional accounts of fandom as a result of perceived loss of culture capital and alienation (marxism) or low self-esteem (psychoanalysis). in other words, fandom is creative and productive not compensatory and self-defeating. i approach research as developmental process between researcher and participant, so those involved take an active role in producing knowledge of fandom through photos and interviews.
i have gained permission from mary franklin at lucas films ltd to conduct my project at CIII as long as participants are not solicited on site. i am also doing participant observation (since i am a life long sw fan i too will be dressing up for the event and keeping a field diary on fan interaction and my experiences), so any help with costume ideas and accessories would be helpful.
if you or anyone you know is interested my email address is sbutcher@kent.edu
thanks

i am a cultural geography student writing my dissertation on the 'where' and 'when' of identity expression comparing fandom with so-called normal culture.
WHAT I NEED FROM PARTICIPANTS IS:
1 a history of costuming
2 answer a few questions about being a fan and where and when you wear costumes (i've heard some interesting stories about wearing sw gear in public)
3 take pictures (i provide a digital camera)inside/outside the CIII event based on the question 'what aspects of this event represent your idea of authentic sw fan culture?' and then elaborate on the photos after.
it shouldn't take more than an hour for the whole thing.
past work on fandom has been particularly elitist and treats fans as nerdy rubes. i hate that and describe fan culture and 'normal' culture as expressions of the same processes. sooo, within my theoretical discussion, i participate in and talk with costumers to illustrate my points that show fandom as artifically 'othered' from so-called 'normal culture'.

plus, i booked a standard double at the wingate and could fit 2-3 people in. my grant will cover it, but being a poor grad student, anything to curb costs helps.
also, since i have the full event pass, i will get those 4 family/friend passes to events and won't use them, so if you help, you can have them.
lastly, since i didn't go to the first two events, some insider info on how the event has unfolded in the past would help. specifically, first day may be overcrowed and somewhat frantic, so photography-costuming might be unproductive. knowing when the crowds die down and best times for costuming and meeting people would be helpful.
in response to the geekness reference, that is exactly what poststructuralist's like myself debase. the fact that all sci-fi/fantasy message boards i have been on refer to each other as geeks or nerds reflects a process of making legitimacy in cultural expression that creates an artifical division between the geeky 'fan' and legit 'aficianado'. this division is understood tacitly or explicitly, but is also bs and is beginning to be theorized as total bs.

Your dissertation sounds intriguing. I've always wondered how students as yourself debate culture...

You might want to try posting this in the costume forums, we have a LOT of people over there, someone might be interested I'd do it myself, but there are more interesting subjects out there.

What are you talking about Benae? I think you'd be an interesting subject.
paxdelere, I think you will find that costumers will be around in great numbers each day, everywhere. At C2 there were always multiple costumers walking, or standing to pose, around the common areas of the convention center. Costumers like to have their photo taken, so I don't think you'll have any trouble accumulating pictures or meeting them.

thanks Benae, i'll do that. congrats on the may 2006 event.
Obi-Dawn, i have permission from mary franklin at lucas films ltd to conduct my research, but only if i have preselected participants (so no on-site recruitment).
but, since i am also doing participant observation, i will be taking pictures and talking with people for my part of the project. though, i still need to choose and prepare a costume of my own.

If it won't take too much time, I am interested. I should have at least 3 costumes ready by C3, a TIE Pilot, an Imperial Officer, and a Jedi.

interviews should take an hour Max. it depends on the depth of answers. the photography time is really up to the participant.
i don't have to be present while people walk around and take pictures, i just need short answer explainations afterwards.
the preliminary interviews can actually be conducted online, through the mail, in person, or on the phone as long as i go over your rights and my ethical guidelines prior to your participation.
BUT, you must sign a research participant release form that allows me to use your answers prior to answering any questions. (you can take back your release anytime you want until the work is published)
i can send you a copy my dissetation if you want when i'm done. your CIII experience immotalized in the kent state university library forever, or for long time anyway.
so...
1 guidelines and rights discussed first,
2 then sign form,
3 then answer questions,
4 then take pictures at your leisure as you enjoy CIII event,
5 we meet quickly after so you can give short explanations for each photo (about 24-30 pics digital is quicker, but i can provide disposables and go to 1hr photo place).
most of time the form and interview happens at same time, but that's only for convenience.
the last thing i want is to make this a long process, i am going as a fan too and know time is precious. if you think you can fit this in your schedule, i would appreciate it.
thanks (wow, i leave long posts... )

Costumes eh?
Now ill have to decide which one to wear during the interview.
Choose.....
Whoops! Wrong franchise.
Ill seek you out. I have a big mouth and always have plenty to say. I have a Masters in Education and my thesis was a video documentary that was supposed to be 10 minutes but I made it 45. I'll give you plenty of good material, as I was at C2.
