I'm going to C3 to see Star wars stuff, get autographs, etc. But for me that's only half of it. I have only ever met one JCer in person, and I know no Star Wars fans locally. So a big part of this for me is meeting other fans, connecting with people who I have a lot in common with, unlike most people around here.

But there's been a lot of talk about how no one wants to socialize at the convention. People keep giving me the impression that everyone just runs off by themselves and you don't get to hang with any Star Wars fans at all.

This seems illogical to me, I mean, I would just naturally want to do stuff with other people, you know, beats waiting in line alone and all that.

But is what I've been hearing true? Isn't there supposed to be a booth for TFN where members can meet and whatever? Does a lot of that actually happen, or do 90% of JCers avoid the booth and go off on their own? There are some JCers going that I really *want* to get a chance to hang out with, and I'm always up for meeting new people too.

So this kinda has me feeling worried. sad

Don't worry, Conn. I arrived on my own last time around but I don't think I spent more than an hour on my own. Make sure you wear a name badge that has your JC name on it so people will come up to you if they recognise you. There will be people everywhere and you'll definitely find someone that wants to do the same things (i.e get something to eat, go see a particular author etc).

If you're really looking forward to meeting someone, arrange a time and place out of the way a bit. 11am on the convention floor might sound like a good idea, but really it's not. Hotel lobbies are a great place to meet up because they usually have security guards there if you need the help.

wink

In short, don't worry. You'll have a great time.

Yeah, I will try and arrange to meet up with a couple people anyway. I don't know if I can do hotel lobbies though, since I am staying far away from the con. I tried to get some friends to stay in my hotel with me, but all the people I was working it out with ended up not being able to go! I guess that's part of the reason I started this topic. Some of my closest JC friends, who I thought were going, aren't, so I kinda panicked.

I am definitely interested in meeting fans there, and any JCers, even if I haven't really talked to ya on the forums, I'm excited to meet all the same!

If you chose the hotels that are near the con, you can still meet in their lobbies - I think there are plenty that are within walking distance.

Have no worries! You will meet ALOT of people. Some people just like to chat while in line with you, others may want to hang out at the convention or go get dinner or something, while others may become great friends whom you keep in touch with after the whole thing is over. Being a Star Wars fan at an event like this is like being in one huge family. Emphasis on huge.

my best advice would be to have seb hook you up. (no, im not being sarcastic this time) most of the jc people i met were people he introduced me to. most of the time im kinda like a turtle, so seb had to give me a little kick in the rear to get me to socialize.

Hehe, yeah I usually tend to be turtleish in situations I'm not comfortable in. I can be the life of the party if I know the people, but sometimes I clam up against my will.

It's great you posted this thread Connemara, I myself was also getting worried since the people who were planning on going with me have been dropping like flies!

As for the Nametags, there is a Thread where some of us have posted some concepts for printing our own nametags. Because I think that would also help in identifying people at C3.

You find out who the real fans are at events like this. I used to host computer gaming parties (LAN parties) and I could always get 20 people to say they want to come a month before. But when the rubber hit the road, I'd be lucky to get 5 or 6 to actually show.

Same type of thing.

Yeah, although in the cases I know about it's mostly due to money issues. I personally wouldn't care, I'd come anyway, and I guess that makes me a more diehard fan, but I guess I can understand in the case of a guy who's trying to get a life started for himself after college or during college or whatever, that if he bankrupts himself on a four day vacation, he's setting back his goals...it's practical.

But terribly disapointing to me. sad

I think it will be fun, we'll just have to always keep our eyes open for familiar names/faces, and not be afraid to run up to people and start chatting.

For most of the lines, it was fairly easy to strike up a conversation with someone.

One smart fan brought SW Trivial Pursuit with him, so one time in line we had a lot of fun playing the game, though we did have to put a consecutive question limit in since most SW fans know the answer to every question anyway.

Trust me, when you have 1 1/2 - 2 hours of sitting there do nothing, you really want to just do anything other than sit there and zone out. happy

Yeah,I agree. Me and my dad had some cool people waiting with us last time in line. It was fun to talk to some people during the hour and 15 minute wait for Jorg Sacul figures. happy
