Safety in Indy?

It's been quite a time since I've last been to the US (seven years) and I wonder if Indy is a save place to be, especially in time for C III?
I can see SW fans being an easy target to some scum. Anyone who lives in Indy who could clear up how Indy is like, citizen wise? Has anyone made any negative experiences during Celebration 2? Not only outside but also inside the Convention Center?
Being 18 years old (and not exactly prepared for self defense or anything) and from Austria where gunmurders are rare I am not sure what to expect.

My brother and I went to C2 together. He was 16 at the time and I was 19. As teens on our own we didn't have any problems with safety. We stayed in a hotel that was about a mile from the convention center and had to walk there most of the time. While we didn't have any issues, it doesn't mean you should do something stupid like walk around late at night alone. We always took a cab back the hotel if it was late when we returned.

Indy seems like a pretty safe city to me. So,you should be ok as long as your careful. My suggestions:
Try not to walk back to your room late at night. If your motel can be reached by the skywalk system, use it. Also,if you have to walk back to your room late at night, try to find a group of people staying at the same motel to go back with.
Just my 2 cents.
P.S.-Indy also seems safer then other city's. Like Atlanta for example. When I was over there for D*C 2003,a homeless guy stopped us on the street, and tried to exchange directions for "food" money. He didn't get violent when we refused. But it was still kind of freaky.

The US is not the ultra violent country you've heard about where every citizen is packing heat and just waiting to blow off someone's head. Things can happen if you don't keep an eye out tho. Best advice is to stay in well lit areas, walk with groups of people and just head straight to your destination, don't make any side trips unless you need to make them.

Well, I could bring a flashlight, or a Lightsaber to light the dark corners. And if some gangsta wants to shoot me, I pull out my jetpack or thermal detonator and scare him away.
I'm in a group of three:
Me (18 year old male- Austrian)
geekgal (19)
another girl (18)
We will also have a car, so I guess that shouldn't be much of a problem with the walking in dark alleys.
Did anyone get robbed inside the Convention Center or during daytime?

When I was there for C2 I did some late night travelling on two nights around 1am 3-4 blocks to/from bars to my hotel, and I had no problems.
It's nothing like late night in New York City, but always practice basic safety stuff like travelling in groups, and don't wander off the regular streets.

I felt very safe in Indy. I felt like I could walk the streets alone if I had to. I had friends of mine (female) walk together to their hotels, and felt safe. There are always crowds of people in Indy on the streets downtown during the con. It's a wonderful, beautiful city, and I think you will really enjoy it. Depending on the hotel you are in, you may walk through the skywalks if your hotel is attached.
Down near the convention center it's very well lit, and beautiful. The underground parking is well lit. The city is bustling all night long. There's always people around.
You are also talking the Midwest of America, the crime is here, but it's not as horrible as you would see in LA or New York. Just come and enjoy yourself. If you are really worried, you'll make fast friends with people, I promise you that, and not have to worry about walking alone.
We have friends of ours coming from Spain and France to this Con. Some coming alone.

I took my wife and 3 year old daughter (at the time) and felt very safe. On Saturday they even walked down to the zoo by them selfs and had no trouble.
But when you live 1 hour north of Detroit any places is safer.

Why does every assume NYC is crime heaven ? When you have more people, you have more crime. We are a big city but the crime rate has also dropped Please don't knock it, it's my home

I'm from Toronto and have been to Indy several times - (probably 10 visits) - and I gotta say it's one of the very best cities in the US! The poeple are super friendly and it's actually one of my favorite spots to be. You really have nothing to worry about - definitely less than you would in any other large city around the world. Just be smart and aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.

I'm a little worried about safety, as well. My mother and boyfriend seem to be a little freaked out that I'm going it alone. I'm 23 and well aware of my surroundings, but am coming from Northern California, and don't know the Indianapolis area at all.
What do some Celebration veterans think of a young gal going by herself? Is that something that you found common at the past events?
I haven't known anyone SW fans (or Indy locals) to be bad people, so I figure I should be fine.

You should be ok. I'd just follow the same advice that's already been posted:
Don't walk by yourself at night, walk with people, stay on the main street's,ect.

Don't worry about it, Princess Leah. I'm 22 and I've traveled alone to far worse cities than Indy by myself loads of times and never had a problem. Just have some common sense about how to conduct yourself and you'll be fine.
