Yes, there really are such things....
I'm going to be posting an occasional "something" that makes Los Angeles and the surrounding area an interesting place to visit. Not that most of us will have any time -- for C-III I flew in a day early so I could finally get a chance to walk around downtown Indianapolis and see the sights, which I knew wouldn't happen once the convention started -- but if you're coming in a bit early or staying a bit late, or you have someone coming with you that won't be going to the convention center every day, maybe some of this will be interesting.
And if anyone has any "requests," i.e., museums, unique stores or restaurants, that kind of thing -- I'll do my best to ferret out the information. But the caveat is that it has to be "different," not just your run-of-the-mill places you find at the local mall kind of stuff. So, ask away!

I mentioned this in the 'Famlies' thread, but the Tar Pits - It's relatively close to the convention center, the park is free and the museum is only like 7 bucks... Just stay on the path....
Edit 2 -I haven't been since I was a kid and I'm making it a point to go when I'm there. It was amazing....

Is there any really cool nightclubs even semi close to the convention center? Or any cool night spots that you could recommend?

I understand there are a couple of dance clubs close by, but they come and go pretty regularly. Will have to check with some of my younger friends to see what's hot right now .
Downtown nightspots -- the bar at The Standard is definitely a hotspot, but unless you're a guest it's difficult (and expensive) to get in there. Casey's Irish Bar & Grille on Grand is always jumping. Lots of places in Hollywood, West Hollywood, etcetera - I'll come up with more as soon as I check with my sources.

Does anyone have any personal insight into the L.A. Museum? I am curious about it. Also, if anyone has been to the Getty, please post any comments, thanks.

The L.A. County Museum of Art has wonderful permanent collections, especially of American art; there's also a large collection of costumes and textiles, and Asian art. The Museum is planning an extensive renovation that will be ongoing through 2007, so portions of the buildings may be closed around the time of C-IV, but there's plenty else to see. It's easy to get to, and there's lots of parking around -- not free, but lots of it. Plus, it's close to the L.A. Tarpits!
The Getty -- just amazing. And up on the hill you get some amazing views. The buildings themselves are inspired works of art. And what's nice, it's free to visit! Also, reservations aren't required, not like the (older) museum that's in Malibu, which just reopened, BTW. The Villa is where the Roman art collection is, the (new) Getty houses their "regular" art collection.

I've been reading your posts for the past 3 weeks on this site and at Rebelscum. You've been very helpful.
I would like some information on Redwood trees. How far are they from L.A. and how do I get there? I'll be in on May 23-29th and my sister and I are only planning to spend 2 days at the Celebration...so we have a couple of days to spend on California's natural scenery.
We have rooms booked at the Hollywood Orchid Suites (for now). We have to book rooms close to L.A. because my husband and his family & friends are staying with us...so I don't want to stray too far away from the convention center because I do not know their plans yet.

Thanks for the nice compliment! It's very much appreciated.
The Orchid Suites will be fine. You are "right there" for Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood & Highland Complex, a bunch of restaurants, etcetera. The 101 Freeway is only a few blocks away. Plus there's Red Line subway at Hollywood & Highland, which will whisk you to downtown L.A. in nothing flat.
As far as the Redwoods go, we are many, many miles away. Redwood National Park, for instance, is 750 miles from Los Angeles - that's an 10 hour trip at least. It's a fairly straight shot north of L.A., using the Interstate 5 and 101 freeways, but it'll take ya a while to get there. Will Palm Trees do? We've got lots of those .

My wife is dying to know where the nearest Jonathon Anton studio is. I'm hoping that it's just to gawk and not to get one of his $400.00 haircuts.

Ya know, I catch that darned show every so often -- and those are the worst hairstyles I've ever seen. I cannot believe people pay money for that LOL. In any event, the studios are over in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, 11 and 13 miles from the convention center. I hope you have a car!

Hey Val, one of the first conditions of my wife going to Celebration IV with me AND dressing up was that I let her get a haircut from Jonathans salon. I can't stand hinm nor can I stand his show. I reluctantly agreed, but her hairstylist came to the rescue. She had blue extentions in her hair and since my little Jedi will be wearing a pink Jedi outfit, she wanted to get the pink extentions. SO, I just saved myself $400.00 and a trip to see that annoying idiot who gives bad haircuts.
I'm with you Val, they are so ugly.

My parents dragged me to some of these museums when I was a kid. Back then a dead bug on the sidewalk was more interesting than looking a bunch of old paintings and stuff. Now I'm just hoping that I'll find a little time to squeeze some of these museums in during my stay. I really want to go to the tar pits. That was the one place I did find interesting as a 7 year old.
