Traveling with Sabers

I figured it was about time for a new post, but this post may be better placed on the cotuming and props board. (If it is let me know ^_^ )
I will be bringing two custom sabers with me to C4. Since they have to be packed in checked luggage, I was wondering whats the best way to pack them without them getting scratched or damaged. I was thinking about getting some kind of small carrying case for the hilts and lining them with foam (Like they did for storing the movie hilts). I cant find any cases that are small, or light enough that I would want to use though. I've checked craft stores and the net. Any ideas? And as far as the blades go, whats the best way to pack them? I was considering wrapping them in foam...but I dunno if they will fit in my suitcase. Any thoughts?

Cover the hilts in sweat socks like I did last year and leave the blades at home. The hilt you can wear and not have to worry about them getting in the way, the blaqdes are cumbersome and annoying. Unless you are going to spar, then bring them. If they aren't too long, pack them in the bottom of your suitcase wrapped in clothes.

No no no no no...
I'm not worried about my ability to get it onto the plane, I was wondering how to go about packing it so it didn't get messed up. And wondering if anyone made custom traveling cases for their hilts or blades. Because as much as my sabers cost me, I dont want them scratched or getting knocked around in my luggage by the airport people man-handling my stuff. =P
Is there any place to buy custom cases that are small and lightweight?

Socks! Nothing will protect it better than covering it in 2 or 3 pairs of socks. The hilt that is. I don't know about the blade.

If the blade comes off, put it in a large poster tube. Add a little bubble wrap or packing pop corn inside to keep it from moving.

Poster tube! Why didn't I think of that!
As many vintage SW posters as I've ordered, I'm bound to have one lying around, and it will prolly fit both blades in it. Thanks!!

Hey Larame, quick question....why do you want to bring your blade? I left mine home last time because I figured it was going to be a pain to carry it around. I hooked my hilt on my covertech clip and I was good all weekend. I was just wondering if there was any specific reason. Obviously it looks better and it looks great when you are posing fotr pictures.

Because I'm a huge dork and have never had the chance to go to a SW Celebration before, and probably wont be able to again, so I REALLY want to have my picture taken in front of the big toy package and pretend I'm a hasbro version of Jaina Solo!

You know, I saw that huge toy package on TV at CII and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I couldn't wait to go to CIII and get my pictutre taken and when I got there, it wasn't as big at the opther one. I was a little dissapointed. Got all dressed up for nothing.
You can always hold the lightsaber hilt and just draw the blade in later with Photoshop. A lot of people did that. If you have never been to a Celebration, I'll tell you, holding the lightsaber the whole time can be a little annoying. If you stop to eat a hot dog, or look at something at a table or are standing in line, it kind of always seems to get in the way. If just the hilt is attached to your belt, it's easy.
Just some friendly advise from a friend.

That makes sense. I didn't think about photoshop either.
I have really gotten into dueling lately though with the local ff. Do they have any kind of dueling activities at the cons? I dont plan on taking it into the convention the whole time. Prolly just one morning for the picture, and then when I go back to the hotel for lunch (If I can have one day when I dont have to eat lunch while sitting in line >_< )I'll just take it back. My husband prolly wont bring his. He don't like to geek out quite as much as I do.
And on a more deviant note, do you think the good people at the Fig would mind a few non-figgers stopping by for a drink? I'm really bummed I didn't get a room there, but I imagine all the hotels in the block will be choc full of SW fans and we can have our own fun.

Almost all hotel bars and restaurants are open to the public. I am staying at the omni and I am going to the fig on eor two nights to hang out. Don't ask Jaina, just show up.

You can lock cases but you need to use FAA/DHS-approved locks that the airport officials can open if necessary. My sister got some when she went to the US last year. Otherwise they might hacksaw your locks off.

I was planning on bringing my saber blade as well ... but it seems most people don't bring it so I guess I'll leave it behind, because I was thinking the same thing "how do I bring the blade"

You might want to try an small pistol case for the hilts. They are usually large enough and have plenty of foam in it so that it doesnt move. You can pack it inside your luggage as well....as far as the blades, I would recommend going to a packing store and having them vacufoam the blades together and putting them in a box that is sent separately. Most of the UPS stores have that vacufoam for expensive breakables that are shipped. Let me know if this helps.
