JediJustin, if they have a showing of ANH at C4, as they did at C3 along with all the other movies before ROTS, then go! The experience of watching a SW movie digitally projected with an awesome THX sound system surrounded by like minded fans was one of the highlights of C3!
Lufta, I saw the Special Editions in the theater back in 1997. But if they are showing the original unaltered version of ANH at CIV, I will definitely make that viewing!

What the heck is the difference between a regular projector and a digital projector. I love technology and I have alot of technology in my home, but the husband never has the patience to explain how things work. Heck, I cant even figure out how to put on the dvd player...way to many elctronics and steps, so I just wait till he gets home.
Amidala, you ever see an older movie that has all kinds of specs and inperfections on the screen? Some people don't even notice. Well, that gets worse with age because well, it's film. It gets scratched, worn, faded etc. Digital projectors work in similar ways to digitial camers etc. The image isn't stored on film... so there is no imperfections. Like Val said, the picture can often be breath taking. Special effects look especially good digitally because you're adding things with a computer. There are no mat lines etc. You're not taking film, splicing it, adding a picture on top of it etc. If you really want to see something amazing, get yourself a PS3 and watch a Blu-Ray movie in 1080p. It's insane. The entire Star Wars collection is coming to Blu-Ray. The older movies will look good enough but Clones and Sith should be the best as they were filmed digitally.

Our projector was under $1200.00 (US). It's HD and is DLP. I have a 92" indoor screen and a 120" outdoor screen. But it will NEVER recapture the feel of the place and the smell of buttered popcorn and pure "AWE" that I felt in '77. I still have my Don Post Vader mask that I recieved to Christmas that year:)

Hi! Another 'old head' checking in. Thanks for starting this thread, JediEddy and thanks to all who have shared their ‘original’ experience.
NabooPop, I can especially identify with your story because it was my mother who introduced me and my father to the first chapter of this great saga. Sadly she was too ill with cancer to see TESB and she died before ROTJ. But Dad and I kept going to see each and every one of them. Star Wars was a comfort and joy to us. We got to see TPM together but he died before AOTC. And so I kept going – until the saga was complete. Thanks, Mom!
I was 9 years old when Star Wars first came to theaters in '77. Mom and I were visiting my grandparents one Friday evening as we frequently did and she said she wanted to take me to see this movie that night called "Star Wars". It was playing in center city. I thought 'well...okay'. I wasn't overly enthused because the title reminded me of Dad coming home after a long day at work and switching the TV from the Brady Bunch to Star Trek - which I didn't appreciate at the time. (I did eventually warm up to Star Trek as I started watching it with him and I like it still.) Anyway, I had no idea what Mom was going to expose me to since I hadn't seen any TV previews and had never heard of it, but any time spent with Mom was great so I was game. We must have taken the bus. When we got to theater called Sam's Place the line was curled all the way around the block! I'm thinking, 'what is this movie??' My mother decided that no way were we going to stand in such a line that night. We definitely wouldn’t get tickets for the time we wanted – plus Mom had ‘problem’ feet. She said we’d come back tomorrow in the car with Dad. And that’s what we did! The three of us were prepared for the crazy line, we got to our seats, the huge vaudeville-sized theater darkened and then this single line appeared…
”A long time ago, in a galaxy far far way…”
And John Williams snatched me right in with music so valiant and lively that my ponytail must have stood straight up, my goggle-like glasses were gleaming fiercely , my popcorn utterly forgotten – I thought of heroes fighting (if necessary) for truth and justice before a single character appeared on the screen! But when that massive star destroyer swooped over my head with all the rich sound effects, my ponytail fainted and my lower lip dropped to the floor in complete awe. Star Wars - owned me…and everyone else in that theater.
I’ve written enough for now. Pardon me, I couldn’t help it. My viewings of Episodes V and VI…those are tales for another time.
By the way, they turned the landmark Sam's Place into a CVS drug store. That's just not right!

Anapad_Nabooine, many thanks for that story. Wow. I'm very sorry about your mom and dad. But I think the Force was strong with them and they will be with you always. And your description of your reaction to the opening of the movie was absolutely priceless!! (I don't remember anymore but think my reaction was probably to jump up out of my seat and then collapse back into it and slide way down lest somebody reach down out of that star destroyer and grab me!)
It's a shame about the theater. There aren't many of them left anymore. The place I saw ANH in '77 was such a place, albeit smaller; a neat old art-deco place called The Avalon. It's had a somewhat better fate than the Aldine/Sam's Place: in the late 80's it got converted into a community theater / performing arts center. Ritchie Havens played there last night, was thinking of going to see if he'd autograph my (vinyl) Woodstock album - and if that doesn't date me, I don't know what will.

Thank you for sharing, AN. You've got some beautiful memories!
I'm sorry to say that the little hometown theater I saw Star Wars in in 1977 is nothing but an empty lot now. They tore it down and left the scar. I have countless memories of the movies and experience I had surrounding that theater, however I think first and foremost of SW when I go back home and see that sad empty lot.

Extremely interesting stories and memories from all of you.
Keep 'em coming for us Younglings to read who were not born/old enough to see ANH in theaters!

Hi folks! I guess all the members here of the Old Jedi Order are busy preparing for the convention. Just thought I'd bump us.

I haven't posted here in a very, very long time, but tonight I'm invested in my C4 travel plans and thought I'd check the forum information out.
I was 21 and got married the week Star Wars came out (guess I'm a lot older than many of you).
It took an awful lot of convincing, but my husband finally relented and said we could spend our 30th wedding anniversary in LA so I could go to the convention. He only wishes to do Friday with me and and our grown sons. He likes Star Wars, he just doesn't "love" it as I do.
Star Wars was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before back in 1977. It was simply "cool" and captured your attention. For several years, I hadn't figured C3PO out. They did a good job of keeping Anthony Daniels a secret back then.
I am so looking forward to this trip. Hope to see you all out there.

I was born in October of 1965 and have been into STAR WARS since before the first time I saw the movie STAR WARS in 1977 and have an ever growing STAR WARS collection. STAR WARS (any of it and all of it) is something special. It has heart and imagination and hope. There's nothing like STAR WARS. Any of it. All of it.
STAR WARS CELEBRATION IV is getting closer!

Howdy there mrsge and SkottASkywalker!
mrsge, what a wedding present you had! And at least your husband is attending C4 with you - my wife of 32 years hasn't even seen all the movies - oh the shame of it!

Amen to that! And I can't wait to get to C4. I wonder if any of us "Senior Jedi" here would be interested in getting together during the con. I would be nice to meet everybody.

Sounds good to me! I was thinking the same thing. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just as convenient as possible for everybody, time-wise.
